Fic and fanvid recs - gen and het - in the following fandoms: Atlantis; Belle; Brooklyn Nine-Nine; Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Community; Edge of Tomorrow; ER; Gravity; The Hunger Games; Jupiter Ascending; The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and Lord of the Rings.

Atlantis 2.12 The Queen Must Die

It was impossible to treat it as just another episode when characters kept talking about the future, obviously, they didn't know Atlantis was going to be cancelled when making it. And it was extra long, which I didn’t realise when I started watching it.

Maybe not having the adventures of a manboy in a setting that hasn’t been thought through, but has been grabbed at because it’s a bit like something that worked in the past would help. With good scripts.

Home Fires episode 1

I decided to give this a try then. It's ITV’s latest drama in the period drama slot recently vacated by Poldark and Downton Abbey’s slot in point of fact (Samantha ‘Rosamund’ Bond is in it). Starting on the eve of World War 2, it focuses on the Women’s Institute of the village of Great Paxton.

The Beeb had some cheek in claiming this was Original British Drama ) Which is to say that this was not a bad episode, although quite a lot of that darkness made me glad that the show is coming to an end, because I don’t think I’d want to watch another whole season going in this direction. And I think that speaks to the show’s problem of not being what it should have been as a Saturday teatime drama for the family (or being consistently good enough to win the audience over by just being what it was).

With so many references to the will of the people and of the gods, there were a dozen cancellation jokes to be made. Overall, what followed made me not particularly regretful that it’s been cancelled, although there were some good bits.

I do wonder how the timing of Age of Ultron will work WRT possible interweaving plot points like this, because we’re behind the US on the show, but we’ll probably get the film a week earlier.

And the TV in the UK news is that Atlantis is back on tonight and E4 will be showing Jane the Virgin, which seems a good fit from what I've heard of the show.

As reported by Den of Geek, Atlantis will not be returning after the second half of the second series. It says something that, apart from hoping that it ends on a total cliffhanger, I don't really care. It was fun at times, had a likeable cast, but was never as good as it could have been. Maybe the show's creators could, um, think things through a bit more when they come up with something next!?

It doesn't feel like a shock either, because the show clearly wasn't doing well enough to return to a Saturday night slot after Christmas. Wonder what random slot they'll slip it in.

I feel that I should explain that I missed Atlantis three Saturdays ago, caught up, thought I’d post about it along with my reaction to the next episode, except, again, I failed to watch it live and only caught up with it on Saturday with no time to post or process (as the Strictly final and Christmas preparations were devouring my brain) and then I watched the latest episode live. Here are my thoughts on all three episodes.

As I said, I watched this between the Strictly shows and not that long after catching up on the last episode, so it was more of a breather than a thing deserving of attention in its own right.

I don’t think this series so far has shown the improvement the programme-makers claimed would take place. I didn’t expect it would materialise, but watching two episodes in one day just confirms it.

I have yet to see the Avengers 2 trailer, but I have seen the Atlantis one. They’ve been promising that the second series will be better. I’m not holding out my breath for their addressing all the problems in series 1, although I do think they should manage better FX. What I gleaned from the trailer was:

So, Atlantis WILL RETURN. I hope they get their act together about a few things. But it's been entertaining.

I really didn't watch a lot of Christmas TV, but then, I rarely do. Well, I caught bits of quizzes.
shallowness: Fred and Ginger dancing in foregroud, him in tails, her in a dark gown, background a white circle (moon or spotlight) (Fred and Ginger dancing)
I'm going to dare to say ‘Most Emotional Final Ever’? Possibly no surprise with four female celebs – which was historical, as we kept being reminded – who had clearly fallen in love with dancing and managed to express it enough through their bodies to get there. In my neck of the woods, Friday’s It Takes Two had been held over to air at 5.30 last night and I watched the backstage bit on the Red Button, so, by Claudia reckoning, that was 7 million hours of Strictly, just last night, with a bit of Atlantis in the middle. Seriously, my TV prompted me to keep it switched on or it was going to autosleep.

I voted six times. I said ‘shut UP, Bruce’ about five times.

I don’t have much to say about It Takes Two, except that Read more... )

That was an exceptionally silly episode, although I did smile at some of the cartoonish elements, especially as played by Addy and Emms. I suspect I’d have been a lot more aggrieved had I watched it live and not caught up while needing a distraction. But the next episode needs to be better.
