shallowness: Movieverse Rogue leaning against a blank wall. (Rogue X-Men Films)
I know everyone is linking to interesting Wonder Woman stuff, but if you haven't seen it, here's a list of heart-warming ways young children have responded to Wonder Woman via Digial Spy.

I meant to post this when reviewing Salazar's revenge, but here's an excellent [livejournal.com profile] idol_reflection essay on (Captain) Jack Sparrow, based on the first three Pirates movies – worth reading the comments for a look at Jack as a trickster: Captain Jack Sparrow - A Legend in His Own Mind by The Stowaway.

And via [dreamwidth.org profile] musesfool The Chrisening of Hollywood from Vanity Fair - an amusing take on the Four Chrises phenomenon here.
shallowness: Sky High's Warren Peace smiling (Warren Peace smiles!)
On Tuesday I posted my first new fic of the year and the first one for six months: Extreme Action, a Sky High, Layla/Warren futurefic. It was first drafted in July 2015, which wasn’t a wonderful time for me. Having a title that would suit an early 90s action flick better than a fluffy tropefic appealed to me, apparently. Anyway, a couple of months ago, as I was doing looking through some drafts, I found that this one didn’t need much work – usually I have stalled before coming up with an ending. In the editing process, it passed the thousand word mark, et voila.

For completeness on Livejournal: this spring, I’ve also reposted the following fics at Dreamwidth and A03. Read more... )
shallowness: Movieverse Rogue leaning against a blank wall. (Rogue X-Men Films)
I said a little while ago that I was going to post a linkspam. Well, here goes in reverse chronological order. I've been holding on to these links for ages, and most of them come via my reading page.

shallowness: Five panels featuring pictures of different female characters based on my interests at the time. (POI Zoe and John at work)
On Thursday night, I fully intended to watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but I sat down to look at books online about twenty minutes before and when I checked the time next, it was six minutes past nine and, well, I'll catch up and write about it later.

Earlier in the week I did watch a whole episode of Suits (6.11) online, i.e. I went and looked for it because it airs at 10pm on a Sunday night, which is not a time I’m going to attempt to start to watch a show.

My previous association with Suits has been fragmentary, growing from a flurry of Harvey/Donna fics on my friends list or het_reccers. Oh yes, I'm so far down the fandom journey that I've read fic without consuming the canon properly - reading outlines or reviews, watching clips or vids will do to give me a grasp of things. Sometimes it turns into my watching the show/film properly. I did try to watch Suits, understood the concept (but the way it all revolved around Harvey and Mike, pretty though they are, didn't hook me and the lawyering didn't either. I grasped that Donna was awesome and enjoyed watching Gina Torres, but I don't think I watched a full episode. In the last one I saw, the music editor was really into the xx (which I understand) and Harvey was in a relationship with a single mother?

Anyway, a TV guide said something about spoilers for 6.11 )

In other news, Festivids went live more than several days ago and I have many new vids to watch.
shallowness: bright flowers in vase against green background (flowers that remind me of Layla)
Last night, at the last minute, instead of catching up with Humans (but I will so I can watch it live from Sunday on), as I’d intended to, I ended up watching Stephen Poliakoff’s Close to the Enemy. I won’t be repeating that action next week.

This is why )
shallowness: bright flowers in vase against green background (flowers that remind me of Layla)
Title: The Sketch
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: Mature
Characters/Pairing: Rolf Scamander/Luna Lovegood
Summary: Rolf is looking through the sketches his colleague Luna has been drawing and finds something very unprofessional.

Disclaimer: Not mine, don’t profit.
Author's Note: 917 words. Written for the comment-fic prompt. ‘Any, any, nude.’

The Sketch: shallowness )
shallowness: Margaret Hale of North and South adaptation sitting at desk writing (Margaret North and South writing)
Apparently some people find round-up posts like this obnoxious. May I suggest scrolling or not clicking? For my part, yes, it's self-promotion, just in case, but it's also a chance to write a little about the writing process or what the fics mean to me. Anyway, if you're interested, over the past week and a half I've reposted the following:

No friend to those with noses (Dark Angel) G. Joshua, Alec. 488 words.
First posted: Late December 2005. Summary: A smelly cat is no friend to those with noses; Joshua has a snout.

A clear view (Dark Angel) PG. Alec, Max, Mole, Dalton (Max/Alec implied). 880 words.
First posted: January 2006. Summary: Alec rescues Dalton, Max is furious at how he did it and Terminal City gets entertained for free.

Days, weeks, months and years (ER) PG. Haleh, Neela and Ray. First posted: February 2006. Two post ‘Dream House’ 12.06 drabbles.

Yesterday, I crossposted: Epicinium (Smallville) Teen. Lois, Chloe, Clark, Gabe, Lana. 2,682 words. Coda for 4.8 ‘Spell’.
Summary: The aftermath of the eighteenth birthday party that Lois and Chloe don’t remember.

Notes )

I don't know if I'll be able to continue reposting fic as regularly, although given that I'm only up to the start of 2006 and only started Dreamwidth in 2009, I don't want to stop again.
shallowness: Margaret Hale of North and South adaptation sitting at desk writing (Margaret North and South writing)
Title: Epicinium
Fandom: Smallville
Rating: Teen
Characters/Pairing: Lois, Chloe, Clark, Gabe, Lana.
Summary: The aftermath of the eighteenth birthday party that Lois and Chloe don’t remember.

Disclaimer: I don’t own these characters and don’t profit from this fanfiction.
Author's Note: 2,682 words. Coda for 4.8 ‘Spell’. Potentially triggering references to non-consensual sex/lack of consent issues. ‘Epicinium’ is Latin for aftermath or afterwards. Written because Chloe didn’t get to enjoy her birthday party, all Lois’s work was for naught and I wanted to recognise that. I hadn’t seen beyond this episode when I started writing this fic. This fic hasn’t been beta read, so constructive criticism is welcome.

Epicinium: shallowness )
shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (DS9 Kira Nerys)
The Maquis parts 1 and 2, The Wire, Crossover, The Collaborator.

For me, these episodes got consecutively stronger and stronger.

How come I’d never heard of ‘The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet’ by Becky Chambers? I only came across it by picking it up off a shelf in a bricks and mortar bookshop because of the title. (Oldschool.) Consider yourself informed if you like female-centric science fiction that takes place in the great expanse that is space, love crews that become families, made up of multi-faceted beings (‘sapients’ to use the novel’s term) working out what it means to be them, be they Human or not, around others.

I went to see Suicide Squad last week (life has been a little busy since). My hopes/expectations were that it would be less dull than Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. It passes on that score, but that doesn’t mean it was ‘good’, though. There were plot holes, there were too many characters and too many flashbacks. Read more... )

I forgot to wait for scenes in the middle of the credits.

Parks and Rec 7.4 Leslie and Ron (this was the only episode available to catch up on, so I hope the next will be 7.5 and Dave won’t skip it).

This is not news if you read my Dreamwidth account as opposed to my LiveJournal one, but I managed to repost four fics last week, by which I mean posting the text to the original posts at lj and posting them for the first time at Dreamwidth and AO3 (and updating the versions on ff.net). All four are from November/December 2005, two are Dark Angel fics and two are post-Serenity ficlets.

And you will know me by the trail of my asskicking (Dark Angel) R (for language and mature themes). Max/Alec. 2,385 words. First posted: November 2005 (lightly edited August 2016)
Summary: Alec is still haunted by Max. Bitch.

can't wash out the blue (Firefly) PG, OCs, River Tam. Drabble. First posted: November 2005.
Summary: a threat.

Untitled Mal/Kaylee kisslet (Firefly) PG, Mal Reynolds/Kaylee Fry, 227 words. First posted: November 2005. Summary: As per title.

Retrieval (Dark Angel) PG-13. Max/Alec, past Jondy/Alec, 3,103 words. First posted: December 2005.
Summary: Max didn't think; Alec is trying to protect himself. (Author's Notes: 'She Ain't Heavy' ended slightly differently. AU from that point on.)

And then I wrote a new ficlet.

What your mama can make you (Nashville) U. Juliette Barnes, Cadence Barkley, Avery Barkley, (background Juliette/Avery). 237 words.
Summary: Juliette writes a song for Cadence.

I saw the prompt at [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic, wrote a draft, but because I hadn’t seen season 4, I felt I should do some research to avoid it being canon-fodder, which I was able to do on Sunday - I hope it's all right on that front. I blame the prompt for making me thinkof the show.

I've also been working a little on some of my WIPs. Before returning to reposting, I hope to get around to posting about other stuff.

I’ve only seen up to season 3. 237 words. Written for the prompt ‘author’s choice, author’s choice, writing a song for your child’ at [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic.

I read Robin McKinley’s Rose Daughter, a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It’s much, much better than her Beauty, another retelling of the fairy tale which it turns out was her first novel and, I’m glad, not the first book of hers that I read. I love the writing, the fantasy setting with its own rules of magic that the reader discovers alongside Beauty (whom I should have found more annoying than I did, considering her traits). I especially liked what McKinley did with Beauty’s older sisters. Recommended if you’re in a mood for a fairy tale retelling in a fantasy setting.

Sorry for the old fic spam on Dreamwidth (and AO3) but it occurred to me on Thursday night that now was a good time to repost old fic. (That’s old fic that’s a decade old. Yikes.) Trying to work out what I was thinking in terms of formatting, titles and archiving a decade ago was a faff initially. I revised one and did a little more to another than correct typos. I was so prolific in 2005 and steeped in Dark Angel fandom, more so than I’ve ever been in the one fandom since as both a reader and writer, but since then I’ve been more multi-fannish and even then, alongside the DA fic, there were Harry Potter ficlets. Um, I may repost more fic over the next few days (but then again, I might not. I intended to post this yesterday.)

The starry dividers are a homage to the fact that I used them in fic in 2005, or at least the fic that were longer than vignettes.

Happy New Year!

Below are my top 10 films of 2014 Read more... )

X-Men Days of Future Past and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies came close to being on this list, but I had all kinds of questions after seeing both, and both are part of franchises that I've been so engaged in over the years that it's hard to judge them as films. I saw The Hobbit yesterday, and spoilers )

Anyway, I wanted to mention and recommend two films that I saw on DVD for the first time in 2014, both directed by Shane Carruth: Primer and Upstream Color. I am not claiming to fully understand either, they're headscratchers, but Upstream Color really moved me and Primer satisfied my geekiness (even if I still don't expect to get the time travel until I watch it a few more times, I actually trust that it makes sense.)

Films that I didn't get to see in 2014 because I blinked and missed them at the cinema include Two Days and One Night, The Grandmaster and Standby. Snowpiercer still hasn't been released in the UK.

Previous lists can be found here.

Yes, it's a terrible time to post this now with everyone gearing up for Yuletide and Christmas holidays, plus it's four months since I last did a recs post, so no wonder there are too many for me to post in one go, but here are 20 fanfiction and fanvid recs in the following fandoms: Alice (SyFy); Avengers; The Bourne Legacy; Brooklyn Nine-Nine; Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Community; The Good Wife; Harry Potter; The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug; The Hour; The Hunger Games; Into the Storm (2014); Man of Steel; Mr and Mrs Smith; The Night Circus and Orphan Black.

Paying it forward: This is your reminder to back up your stuff! I had an USB stick meltdown yesterday and was very fortunate not to lose a lot of files. As it was, I spent a good few hours panicking slightly.

Furthermore, this is my fanfiction.net beta profile (feel free to offer feedback, it’s been up for a while, but it was only yesterday that I realised that it had all kinds of formatting errors that would make most people virtually run away).
