I dipped in and out of the One Love Manchester benefit concert, but from what I saw and heard I thought Ariana Grande stepped up remarkably.

I watched a fair chunk of the Eurovision song contest last night, from Armenia to Cyprus, which is more than I've done for a while. I used to love it, but it got too big and thus too gruelling. I have caught glimpses of it since last posting in 2012 but gone are the days when I could sit through all the performances and the voting.

I went to see Beauty and the Beast (2016) with baggage - I saw the original movie at an impressionable age, adore it and used to have a Belle icon on my lj (I had an OUAT!Belle icon too, for that matter). It felt as though most of the rest of the audience hadn't been born when the first film came out, although I'm sure they grew up with it, or Emma Watson as Belle.

I went to see La La Land (like a lot of people over the weekend – I’ve heard loads of people who don’t regularly go to the cinema say they want to see it.)

Out of the cut: I loved it. It's really good and it you have a shred of love for musicals, you'll love it too. Watching 'Singin' in the Rain' before it really worked for me.

I watched Pitch Perfect 2 on DVD last night, having been unable to see it in the cinema. I thought it was a bit of a mess, suffering from sequelitis. It coasted a bit on liking the characters from their previous outing, the actors' charm - Hailee Stanfield is a welcome new addition, in particular - and it is funny in an offbeat way. The musical numbers were generally my favourite parts.

I enjoyed Bill, which I saw in the cinema a few days ago, much more unreservedly. It's the Horrible Histories team doing a Shakespeare biopic and it's very, very funny in an inclusive way, kids will love it, accompanying adults will love it and so will people who know their Shakespeare. Not always for different reasons, either, because doesn't everyone laugh at silly voices? It left me smiling and shipping spoiler? )

The thing is, I probably laughed just the same amount when I saw the trailers for both films, but one stuffed most of the film's best jokes into the trailer, while the other had more to choose from...

I didn't watch Atlantis, so expect a massive catch-up post at some point, but watched/had The X-Factor final on in the background as I wrapped presents. It was all very loud and, despite the fact I've only seen a few minutes here and there over the past few years, nostalgic. In brief. )

[personal profile] swordznsorcery linked to the BBC’s latest musical extravaganza, a group of various singers and musicians performing 'God Only Knows' and sets it in context, which might be useful if you're not from the UK. I've seen a part of it on TV subsequently, but it's worth seeing in full. Although there are a couple of cheesy moments, on the whole, I love the gilded fantasy touches.

Den of Geek has a nice little overview/look back at Space Precinct

Cue me asking ‘Was it really 20 years ago?’, thinking about it and realising it had to be. I liked the show, which aired in that 6pm BBC2 slot that also gave us Farscape, Buffy and Star Treks, perhaps more for its potential that what it generally was (as the feature acknowledged). The cops in space, crime-sci-fi hybrid set-up is a juicy one. And yes, of course I shipped Jack and Jane. Looking back, the fact that the three main characters were human and not alien seems like a let-down. Wouldn't it have been interesting if Brogan's partner was alien. I was more interested in the Tarns, the alien race that Jane’s partner Took was than the Creons* - the one that most of the other cops were – they had more mystic powers and seemed a bit more, well, alien.

Finally and belatedly, Which Veronica Mars character are you?

I was Mac.

*I don't recall if I've got them the right way around, and I'm not going to root up my tie-in novels (oh yes) to check. The show doesn't have an entry of its own on TvTropes.

Finally, I had an inspiration for what would be the best ever ever episode of Revenge. So, the British media has been full of Daniel Day-Lewis and his likely win of an Oscar for Lincoln, reminding me that he was in Last of the Mohicans with...Madeline Stowe. YEAH. I know it's unlikely, we've also been reminded that he's very picky about his projects, but I've been chortling to myself thinking about DD-L cast as an investor or someone higher up in the Initiative or whatever, wandering about the Hamptons, possibly being genial but lethal underneath and interacting with various characters and how their pouting would stack up. Please get on that, Revenge, it'd be so entertaining.
