Strictly week 4/icons week

It Takes Two broke the news that due to a rib injury (ouch, and no wonder given that disco salsa), Delta would be getting a week’s bye. Time will tell if that will be sufficient for her to recover to dance full out. It sounded like she’d be easing back with something slow. We learned that Will’s offspring has arrived too, and it then occurred to me that the producers must have been worried that the birth would happen during the live show.

So, week 4/icons week:

Do you know what? ‘Iconic’ got beat to death repeatedly, and it wasn’t the only thing that was overdone on this show. I started watching this late, so I knew I wouldn’t be able to vote. ( Read more... )

Movies seen in September

The fact that we’re well in the second week of October as I post this shows how busy I’ve been (not going to the cinema much, though.)

I did get to see Coyote v. Acme, yay! I’ve wanted to see it since first hearing about the project, Bugs Bunny and the Animaniacs have a special place in my heart, as does Farscape’s ‘Revenging Alien’, for WB cartoons were a part of my childhood. Then came the news that Warners studio were shelving the film, which had tested well, for TAX PURPOSES. Word got out about it, everyone disapproved, another studio picked it up, and I thought I’d lost my chance to see it when it came out, but I hadn’t. The trailers were nearly all for animated kids films, of which the only interesting one for me was Ghosts: The Haunting of Button House or whatever it’s called. (Hexed sounds a lot like ‘X’ is all I’ll say.)

As for Coyote v. Acme, it’s well worth seeing. I smiled throughout and laughed a good deal, and that’s what you want from a comedy. ( Cut for length, I don't think there are massive spoilers here. )

I didn’t get to the cinema again during September, but I did watch Shang Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings (on All4, the same streaming platform where I’d seen Simu Liu play a spy so recently in The Copenhagen Test, ( Cut for length and spoilers )

Strictly week 2 (movie week)

I saw three out of the four next It Takes Two episodes, although there was some fast-forwarding/walking off to do some other stuff with me. ( Brief thoughts )

I haven't forgetten that I normally think movie week is too early, and this week, the celebs had to deal with doing a different dance (mostly) on less time and facing elimination already. But, as I said before, the producers had their reasons.

( I'd say tl;dr, but I haven't even attempted a summary, so this will have to do )

Mixed feelings about Marvel-related things

I sat down to watch the next episode of WandaVision, and found it had vanished off ITVX. Aargh, I should have binge watched harder (I am so bad at binge watching.) For instance, I shouldn’t have watched this when I did, I should have kept on with WandaVision, and just kept on watching till the end of the series. (Or Disney should put it out on DVD in the UK.)

I mainly corrected typos and switched one word for one that was better, but I really thought it was overwritten in hindsight. And the portmanteaux I chose really date it (I can’t even be sure I was being ironic when I first posted it.)

I then reposted Taylor Updates PG. Characters/Pairing: Taylor, OFC, (Taylor/Ryan). Missing scene/script format. 628 words. First posted: October 2007. Spoilers: Set during ‘The End’s Not Near, It’s Here’ (ep 4.16). Summary: A translated missing scene from the finale.

It was originally posted very soon after 'Taylor's Vimptal Question.' The only editing I did was to add an errant full stop. But in the process of doing this, I realised it hadn’t been available in years, as I’d only provided a link to my Geocites website on LJ, and I don’t even remember when that disappeared. I never posted it on ff.net, because it’s in script format, something I may only have dabbled in twice.

I am now down to single figures when it comes to fic to repost.

I’ve been paying more attention to the presenters in the media build-up than the contestants, honestly. Emma and Josh are clearly more extroverted, but I presume Johannes will shine in the structured nature of the show. Apparently, they’re all sharing all the presenting duties. (I only learned this Saturday that Ellie Taylor will now be presenting ITT.)

It’s a perfect day for a drive: crazykrystle (pre Jake/Amy)

Enjoyable early days fic.

Summary: Jake teaches Amy to drive stick (and nobody dies).

Crown Duel

Twelve Views of Meliaia and Vidanric: Ione (ensemble, Melaria/Vidanric, spoilers for Stranger to Command, too)

This is gorgeous, such a great use of the various POVs as the relationship develops and some see through Vidanric's control, but how everyone sees things says such a lot about them. Very much in keeping with the canon voice.

The Fall

The Yawning Grave: nu_breed_vids (Ray character study)

This is intense and moving.

Gilmore Girls

The Shower Curtains Have (Hippo) Eyes, Or: Why Interior Designing To Torment Your Spouse Is Never a Good Idea In The Long Run: dollsome (Lorelai/Luke, ER)

I enjoyed this so much. Great voices, great depiction of their relationship.

The Hour

Really nice balance between the sharp descriptions of the exterior and the emotional interior here. And totally in character, too.

Little Women

Your Heart Understood Mine: akamarykate (Jo/Bhaer, epistolary, based on the 1994 film)

Really well done, just great glimpses of the developing relationship and Jo's growth, the unsent letters were powerful, and I loved this take on Jo's impetus for writing about her family.

Movies seen in July-August (August really)

As in June, I failed to see Disclosure Day at the cinema. In my defence, the last week it was on in the cinema it would have either meant braving the heat or going to a late showing. I didn’t get around to seeing The Odyssey in July either, as the logistics of going to see a nearly three-hour long film didn’t quite work. But I got to see it in August.

I didn't go see the latest Spider-Man because I haven't seen the previous one (because I haven't seen Dr Sleep 2 etc...) I wanted to see Sunny Dancer, Coyote vs. Acme and something else probably, but I ended up travelling a bit, and was either tired or coughing… Let's see what September brings.

News and Wandavision in colour

I meant to post this a few days earlier, but I was shocked and saddened to learn of Hayden Panettiere’s death, and then read some of the news stories about what she’d been through before and after I watched her in Heroes and Nashville, both shows I watched, enjoyed, even wrote fic for, but then stopped watching. I don’t remember if it was by choice or that they switched to channels I didn’t have. (Actually, it was the second for Nashville.)

The moral of this post is: if you wait long enough (about five years), Disney will show WandaVision on ITVX as part of its efforts to get people to sign up to Disney+ and you will get to see it even though you are a stubborn, tight-fisted pleb. I’ve tried avoiding spoilers over the years, but haven’t fully managed, so I think I know where this is going, but anyway, I squeed to get to see it for myself, I am still squeeing.
