TV again

On the Strictly news, a while ago, we learned which pros weren’t coming back, with Karen getting some extra attention for being on the show for so long. The rest do make sense given whether they’ve had partners or not and what they’ve done with what partners they had. Well, Gorka aside, but if he’s got a gig as a judge on the Spanish version, that makes sense.

The big news is the presenters: I’d read that the ones who got named were shortlisted, so it wasn't a total suprpise. I can see Emma Willis working as the new Tess, I’m most pleased about Josh Widdicome, because I really liked his attitude when he did the Christmas show that time. I don’t quite know how having Johannes as a ‘roving reporter’ will work, but it is a way of keeping a beloved dancer who has broken out on the show. We shall see how it works in practice, of course.

I don’t think my takeout from the The Devil Wears Prada 2 trailer was meant to be, ‘Yes, but have you checked Miranda Priestly out for early-onset dementia?’ But it was. But I did take advantage of the fact that The Devil Wears Prada was being streamed by Four to rewatch it. ( Read more... ) So, yes, I plan to go see the sequel, even though I think this habit of releasing sequels 15 years and more later is beyond ridiculous.

The Other Bennet Sister, episodes 1-3

I succumbed to this. Succumbed? Well, I was a bit of a hold-out, I haven’t read the book it’s based on. I have a somewhat less than straightforward relationship with Austen derivative works, and I say that as someone who’s written fanfic. I might be prejudiced, but I did think the best lines in the first two episodes were lifted from Austen. I also think you’ll get maximum enjoyment from this if you are familiar with P&P and Austen’s oeuvre.

But eh, every episode is half an hour long, and as I found with Cardiac Arrest, a darker comedy drama, that’s refreshing, and makes it easy for episodes to slip down. What follows was watched in one sitting, more or less, which counts as bingeing for me.

Making Mary the endearingly awkward heroine (Ella Bruccoleri’s face shows all the feelings) is working, and the meta is interesting, even if it sometimes rubs against the purist in me. The purist that would probably be fine with modern day AUs. And yes, there’s a part of me that worries that being a purist about Austen makes me a Mary.

Movies seen in March

It was only one movie, and that was Project Hail Mary. The trailers felt very much like a presentation of the 12A blockbusters Hollywood has for us this year. I’m glad that I first saw the Dune Part Three one in the cinema, featuring ( Read more... ) It was followed by another Zendaya flick, sorry, the latest Spider-Man movie, ( spoilers for trailer ) and then I remembered that I haven’t seen the last Spidey film and was reminded of my distanced relationship with most Avengers movies these days.

As for Project Hail Mary, although I felt I’d been stalked by promo clips for it going in, that wasn’t a problem when I watched it. The reductionist take is it’s Gravity meets The Martian only even goofier. Well, it is directed by Lord and Miller, after all. It’s entertaining, in a word. Gosling has the chops and charm to carry it. It looked fab, I chuckled, I was engaged, but no more. ( some general spoilers )

I have time over the next week and a half to go to the cinema, but it looks as though the choices are mainly kids films and horror. (I’ve seen the trailer for The Drama, yet another Zendaya film, and based on that, I don’t think I want to watch the whole thing to find out what her character was meant to have done.)
