Over the last couple of days, I've been to see Lucy and Into the Storm and been disappointed by both, although I had adjusted my expectations having glanced over reviews. Still, I think they both prove that their leads (Scarlett Johanson and Richard Armitage) deserve better (like Black Widow solo movie better, to keep banging that drum.)
Lucy is not as much fun as the trailer promises it is, and I kept thinking of other X-Men knock-offs that were more fun. Other B movies do not make the mistake of taking their cod science seriously and letting that get in the way of delivering. Besson kept inserting these stills from nature to prove his point, and I kept thinking 'Get on with it.' Though there are stylish and exciting scenes, and Johansson does her best to lend shade to her character, I would really rather have watched her in the film that Julian Rhind-Tutt thought he was in. There was some really quirky casting going on here - I didn't recognise Pilou Asbaek to my mortification.
The pros for Into the Storm has Richard Armitage (and his voice) and decent effects, but the enormous cons are that the script is by the numbers and the found footage/documentary conceit is beyond half-baked. If you're going there, commit like it's Cloverfield or don't do it. Remember when films like this had better higher concepts and script doctors?
And the trailers before both films were mostly dispiriting.

I am slightly sad to hear about Into the Storm because based on the trailer I thought it looked like fun. However I agree with you about the found footage concept so I think I'll skip it.
I do want to see Lucy (if it's Luc Besson there's an 80% chance I'll love it, whatever the flaws) but the reviews have been mixed enough that I think I'm just going to wait to get the DVD.

A film that is Richard Armitage versus Tornados should be better.
I was trying to think if Lucy was a film that, because of the stunts or whatever, I'd say needed to be seen in the cinema if you could, but it's probably not, although it's certainly got style. And is the better of the two films.
