shallowness: Catwoman looking at the Batsign in the Gotham City night sky (Catwoman watching Batverse films)

Back to Gotham

So I’ve been mugging up on season 3 via Den of Geek’s reviews and video clips (of the Selina & Bruce variety). I understand there was a Bruce doppelganger with bad hair, which improved so that he could pretend to be Bruce for a bit; Oswald was mayor and had a thing with Ed. Jerome acolytes brought him back (I approve!), because nobody dies on Gotham – so Selina came back, and if it wasn’t due to the magic of cats, I’m happy that it was due to Aged-Up Ivy. Hopefully, Barbara will also return from the dead. Also Bruce angsted like he lived in Capeside on whether Selina was his girlfriend, her mother came back and Selina’s trust issues got huge. Jim zzzzzzzzzz and the Court of Owls zzzzzzzzzzzzz and Alexander Siddig is Ra’s al Ghul, EXCITING and I hope I didn’t get too spoiled by season 4 video captions.

4.1 The Dark Knight: Pax Penguina

I might have been worked up by all the delving into season 3 over the past day and a half, but I was really pleased to watch the show, and found a lot of it enjoyable. There was a lot going on, given that it was a season premiere – and we didn’t quite get to everyone, I think.

The main pleasure was watching young Bruce – can’t call him ‘wee’ any more as I’m always keeping an eye out for which of the adult actors aren’t taller than him – start Batmanning. And chortle at the very end as he fell into a law enforcement noose. Baby steps, young vigilante/superhero. But honestly, I squeed at him disappearing on Jim, on the brawling (we will not talk about my relationship with violence on this show), the way Bruce as Bruce flattered Penguin into spilling beans and the costume upgrade during the episode.

Plus, SELINA. I was delighted she’d teamed up with Tabitha and got her whip (and all of her Catwoman developments last season). That scene was ace, because it’s fun for her to have a mentor (more morally questionable than Alfred, mind/even, but responsible in this light). Plus it was so satisfying to have felt a little sorry for the gang of objectionable young men facing her.

The scene with Bruce was gorgeous. The way he jumped up to join her, apologised for lashing out (which she’d done on him, but never apologised for, because he’s the better person), and the choice to cut to their feet and Alfred’s commentary. I need confirmation that there was a severe lack of kissing in season 3, or was I unable to find the evidence?

The main throughline of the episode was Penguin’s plan to license criminals, which undercut the police and didn’t sit well with Bruce and Jim (Jim made the excellent point about where you draw the line. That is the last I’ll be commending Jim.) I was thrilled to see Victor, clearly enjoying himself, enforcing it. The twisted logic of the unlicensed gangs was fun, although it was eminently predictable that using and abusing Crane like that would create a real monster. Still, I was chuffed to see the show returning to a character they’d trailed back when I was watching the show properly.

The toxin-inspired visions really are nightmarish.

Sadly, the utter incompetence of the GCPD continued. I’m not talking about the corrupt commissioner (and mayor) ceding to Penguin, but how self-righteous Jimbo is up against the rest of the useless cops, which would work better if his MO wasn’t so violent and if he and Bullock could clear a room properly. So, if there had been less going on, there was plenty that was predictable and might have grated.

Still, I loved that Ivy was the spanner in the works, breaking the deadlock because she was irked that Penguin had shut her out (and Tabitha wouldn’t let her chat to Selina. I was a bit confused by that because I missed whatever happened in season 3 to lead to it.) Having said that, the bride aside, how long before we saw a woman/girl in this episode? We got a glimpse of Ra’s al Ghul, which will do for now, but I hope Siddig gets better stuff to do than he did in Atlantis. The pronunciation of his name is not the one they used in Batman Begins.

There seems to be a lack of season 4 icons about.
