Way back on Sunday...
I caught up with Poldark 3.3
Some new and old faces. Recasting Geoffrey Charles makes sense (and indeed the other kids), and him towering over Elizabeth made me laugh. Somehow, I don’t think she’s going to give George more kids (he might be infertile). Her characterisation was wayward, agreeing with Verity that she wasn’t going to stand in the way of love, then being the society wife who didn’t blink at George purchasing influence – so I doubt she’d behave any better if forcing some people to get married led to greater influence. Especially if Verity was nowhere near.
We got a rake in Monk Adder, George’s new corruption guru, and we got Rebecca Front as poor Morwenna’s mother in law. I look forward to her scenes with her son Whitworth. And little Sarah was born, and the running joke about Caroline not being able to stand her turned sour – is Dwight worried she’s blind? The sooner he tells Caroline the better.
Verity’s visit seemed long, but of course travel was such a bother then that you might as well stay for an episode.
I didn’t get worried about the State of Demelza and Ross due to the opening exchange of letters, which may suggest that that bit wasn’t as effective as it was meant to be.
While Ross was away, Demelza decided to matchmake her new servant with Drake. Later he made the excellent point that he still wasn’t over Morwenna and it wouldn’t be fair to propose to Rosina.
Anyway, twas the mine what made Ross return from dabbling with temptation in London and speaking his mind about poverty. He returned to say some stupid stuff to Demelza and found his friends were distancing him now that he was an MP in London. His angsting over the latter was rather sweet. He won his point about the mine, but things only came right with his mates with the lads after some brawling. He also got to be another character reminding Elizabeth of the Poldarkiness of Trenwith. And bonus points for telling Demelza he’d been there and having a frank conversation…which probably lead to them not waking up clothed.
Whitworth looks like he’ll be more awful in the next ep, but revealing a deathbed confession? Villain!
Instead of watching the next episode live to get the answer to some of those questions, I watched Agents of SHIELD 5.18 Option Two
I liked (and took sides) on the fights the team had, and needed to have after everything that had happened recently, although I thought Coulson let them all go on too long. The redshirt Agent (or did he survive?) saying that the alien threat was nothing new but the fighting was was deserving of a good snort, as was the So Married snit May had with Coulson for not waiting for all the options before pressing the button. This is SHIELD property, it should have an alien attack option.
Daisy was right to call May the sanest one, as those who thought they were invincible mainly still held that view. I thought Yo-Yo’s self-justification was weak, and comparing what she did to Ruby to May’s actions in Bahrain was iffy. She did, after all, use Ruby’s own weapons on her, there’s no way it wasn’t revenge, and Mack’s suggestion that the price was too high was fair.
Meanwhile Fitz is still mean to his grandson. Deke floated the multiverse theory, while Fitzsimmons thought that he was part of the loop (there’s no evidence of that) and that he’d blink out of existence if they did break it. I tend to think it’ll be fannish reaction to him that will decide who’s right.
There was a little facing up to the question of whether they let Coulson die – May says no, Daisy is digging up her mother’s grave to stop it!!! On the other side, the possibly not thinking straight Yo-Yo. Phil may be with her.
We got an oblique Infinity War reference, suggesting that the rest of the series will be set within a short period of time – although I don’t think these characters have stopped for a proper break since the last season, Fitz’s imprisonment aside. I…can’t think too much about that, because as if another alien warship wouldn’t have been noticed, and I don’t know how the show can or will absorb the events of the film – they’ve already jumped into the future and a virtual reality if they’re looking to dodge it.
Lots of alien monster horror action going on, Fitzsimmons foolishly split up, May wouldn’t let Coulson talk about his feelings. Talbot’s desire to make up for what he’d done – including giving up the co-ordinates led to him getting the slo-mo hero action and all the gravitonium. Presumably his mind is already so fractured that he’ll be able to cope with the other voices? Or not. We were left to wonder what he was taking Coulson up for – I know it’s the alien overlord, but is it good or ill?
