Strictly Halloween 2018

I really didn’t know what to make of the Day of the Dead-themed Shake Your Body group routine, so I spent most of it trying to recognise people. Ashley’s dancing looked good, though.

Enter Tess in slit-tastic red with better hair than Claudia in buttontastic black. By Strictly standards, the judges were quite restrained, or so I thought until I saw Shirley’s eyes. I liked the bare tree motif on Darcey’s dress.

Tough for Graeme to do an iconic dance plus a cha cha. Some bits worked better than others – the moonwalk was good. It was a bit stiff, though I wasn’t quite expecting the comments to be quite so harsh, and I think lack of sleep affected Oti.

They have subverted the stigma of putting couples on second this year, haven’t they? More Beeb show promotion, with Kevin showing his feminist credentials and pop culture nous. I admit to doubting him, but in the context of the routine, Stacey playing the man’s part totally worked. I thought the tango worked choreographically and execution-wise from her. Given that she’s clearly had less of a dance background than Ashley and Faye, Stacey impresses (on top of her likeability.)

That was a great concept for Ranj’s jive and the cozzies had wow factor until I realised he must be sweltering. As for the dance, let’s just say it didn’t compare with Danny’s jive from last week.

Kate’s make-up was exquisite. As for the rumba, I thought she had good hips, but noticed the lack of extension and fluidity – she stopped a couple too many times, and I thought she got worse as the routine went on. The lyric ‘almost’ was repeated in the song, which covered it, although by the time the judges had finished dissecting her performance and given her scores, I felt sorry for her.

For once, there was effective use of dry ice at the beginning of Danny’s American smooth. Very decent frame and there were effective bits, but, unsurprisingly, it never matched his jive. Total disagreement scoreswise from the judges. (Looking back, the routine was relatively unmemorable, with no strong gimmick, which worse dancers had.)

Ashley had a starring role in her Charleston, in that her character was taking the initiative and the colour scheme made you look at her the most. I thought it was quirky, lively and a world of yay! (Odd that it didn’t connect more with the studio audience.) I was with the judges and delighted she’d got 10s. Less so that Bruno is now clambering on top of stuff to outdo Darcey.

I have been studiously avoiding mentioning the awful VTs, but the creepy dolls were creepy.

That version of ‘I Put a Spell on You’ and the concept and Katya as a doll overwhelmed Seann. I did like his standing stillish spin bit. I spent most of it wishing she’d come up with this routine for Joe last year. With the same score as contestants people like more, he was clearly in trouble again.

Charles’s jive was quirky and characterful and fierce. I enjoyed it. (I didn’t notice the timing issues.) Understandable reaction to a 25 from the couple. (I nearly talked myself into voting for them, but I was happy with the overall scoring by the judges.)

Emosh VT from Faye (‘from Steps’ is not a surname). I was looking forward to this routine and it was fabulous. So stylised, with some of their sexiest moments in the middle of it. It showed her off, but their timing was so good. She deserved more attention to the great details from the judges, like, yes, the tippy toe bits. 10s too – a breakthrough for her, and back to matching Ashley at the top. (The top three ladies continue to make their cases for being in the final.)

Joe continues his weird incontinence talk. Their foxtrot began with waltzerography (oh Strictly). I liked the parts in hold more than the break-outs. I agree that he’s come on so much in the ballroom, and his journey of improvement continued, with 9s and his highest score, matching Stacey. Shirley acts like he’s ten years younger than he is, and Bruno was inappropriate.

What is it with DWTS winners and long-windedness? Shurrup Scherzinger.

AJ’s wig had been catching my eye in the Clauditorium all show, but in fairness, it looked better in close-up. I was intrigued that they’d given Lauren’s paso the final slot although it makes more sense having seen it. The Evil Queen was a great look for her, and the routine had a camp, camp ending (and then after she was technically done, like last week, she showed she was really In It). I agreed about the intent, and was glad to see her get her highest score. She ought not to be in trouble after that.

Strictly Halloween Results

EXCELLENT pro opening routine, all drama and a starring role for Oti, and I’m sincere in saying that her clambering on to that table was brilliant.

Tess was the best dressed, easily, for once.

In the recap, Darcey was probably far more accurate than she meant to be when she claimed there’d be frightful dances.

They’re still divvying them up into three. The bunching up of the lower scores meant that my concern for Danny was wrong.

I will give Rita Ora’s people props for using the Strictly set to a greater extent than most people do, but I spent the song thinking how that was an interesting mix of that woman off Game of Thrones and those dollies that covered toilet papers only with a see-through skirt of a look. By ‘interesting’ I mean ‘unfortunate’.

They ought to rename the bit where the judges come visit Claudia ‘Craig, explain yourself.’ I would have liked to hear his rationale for not giving Ashley a 10 too. Genuinely.

To Ranj’s shock, Graeme was under the red light. I think there was more tactful and useful advice in Darcey’s comments than what came out of her mouth. As soon as both Craig and Darcey had chosen to save him, I felt fairly sure that Seann was going.

After It Takes Two Monday, I’d very much like to hear Joanne Clifton’s list of top celeb men at ballroom.
