Vox: shallowness

The world tilts on its axis, and his footstep falters. The hairs on the back of his neck are standing, though, as he hears her voice, husky with the twist of honey that is the storyteller’s lilt. It’s been so long – so long since he heard it in the flesh. It’s even been a long time since he last called her number, just to hear her recorded message, a long time since he listened to that clip of her doing her party trick of counting backwards from ten in five different languages, and ending on a chuckle. Yet he recognises her voice, impossible though it is to hear it.

He turns very slowly, it feels like hours, but his deliberate steps take him to her in seconds.

“You’re alive,” he says, interrupting her mid-speech, which is not like him, not at all.

“So, everyone keeps telling me,” she says, her voice amused, good-humoured, understanding. “I survived the coronation attack in my universe, Wilf.”

It’s the abbreviation that does it. Nobody else apart from his grandad called him that. He clutches at her, all restraint and manners gone. She embraces him back.

“Here too,” she whispers in a kind of wonder, although he isn’t sure he was meant to hear.

He thinks he will never let her go, but he must. He thinks he will never help her return to her universe, but when she asks, he will, because her Wilf is waiting for her to come back and right his world.
