shallowness: Fred and Ginger dancing in foregroud, him in tails, her in a dark gown, background a white circle (moon or spotlight) (Fred and Ginger dancing)

Strictly semis

My response to whatever Lauren was saying in the opening VT was that she needed to get votes to keep her out of the bottom two.

A tribute to Quality Street from Tess and Shirley (the latter wearing a gown, not something that looked like a fashion student’s last-minute project, TESS). Darcey in a white trouser suit with fashionable shoulders and Claudia in a fringe dress that could be read as an allusion to her bond with Stacey.

The celebs got to see clips of supporters, and I was mostly in the mood to be glad that they got to see kids supporting them, not tired of the pretence that the pros had anything to do with it.

A crowd-pleasing, energetic and probably the least gimmicky Charleston of the year from Stacey. There was even some light and shade to it. The bookending of them as old people didn’t work. They both looked great. Strong opening.

That felt like lots of smoke for Joe, although it was only covering half the dancefloor. I thought he did quite a good job, even if I felt he was more doing the steps than dancing, and as soon as the judges mentioned the rise and fall, I went ‘oh yeah, the Viennese Waltz shouldn’t have that’. As Claudia pointed out, those weren’t the scores he’d got used to, but then I thought him slightly overmarked then, and undermarked now by Craig.

The clips of supporters (after two weeks in the dance off) elicited tears from Ashley.

She and Pasha had a similar look to her tango, I thought, but anyway I don’t think I’ve seen a celeb embody the cape quite so much before. Her flexibility impressed me, although I agreed with Darcey that it felt like a busy routine overall, but then there were slower bits. Pasha claiming the stumble was on him ought to garner votes. They deserved the 9s all round, but I felt that they both needed to take a deep breath and have a calming run-through before doing their next routine.

Dave Arch who? Claudia switched allegiances to Huw Edwards, and her reaction to him saying and gesticulating ‘forward slash’ was beautiful. But he’s probably wise to keep passing on competing on the show.

Lauren did a very creditable tango – it being ballroom and a dance that you’re allowed to be strong in favoured her. I also thought AJ made clever choreographic choices about the flourishes he put in.

It was noticeable that Faye and Giovanni got emotional over the VT, suggesting it really had been a week of tribulations. (I only saw ITT on Monday, sniff.)

They gave us a sunshine-y proper samba. I smiled throughout and enjoyed seeing so much recognisable samba content done well.

Was it at this point that Claudia and Tess joined forces and I took Claudia’s compliment to Tess about being dramatic as a dig at Tess being bad at comedy?

Stacey’s Viennese Waltz left me wanting to praise Kevin for understanding the song and his partner, showing her off beautifully. So, yes, I disagreed with Craig. Her attitude to judges’ critiques is so likeably human.

You could see that Joe had been studious about trying to understand the Argentine tango, and what looked like terrible free arms in the training clips turned out to be decent use of props. But I entirely agreed about the lack of action/reaction, while I thought that the 6 was too low.

The judges’ comments in the introductory clips were actually more informative than their judging comments or bits on Sunday usually are. Except when they contradicted their previous words.

A lovely, enjoyable, graceful American smooth from Ashley, with beautiful lifts, but the one-armed one was extra special. The only 40 of the night – what a boost, and a deserved one. What Pasha said touched her, and his answer to Claudia’s question was well considered.

I thought Lauren started off well, but then I got distracted, wondering if they’d stay on the confined space of ‘the boat’ and then it got worse and came close to being the car crash I’d feared when I heard their second dance was a samba. AJ’s answer to Claudia’s question made even Pasha seem natural.

Got to start with Faye’s LOOK, all sophisticated, with the back working as well as the front. But then the dance was amazing, especially her legs. I think this was the dance by her that I emotionally connected with the most. So, I’d say she won the night, even though she tied with Ashley and didn’t get a 40, but her samba was the best of the first dances.

As soon as the show ended, Lauren and AJ were probably pleading with the producers to let them do their tango again. The marks were quite stark between the best and the rest, even allowing for Stacey getting a gimme like the Charleston – Faye mastered the samba and AT. Lauren should be facing Joe in the dance-off, but will she?

I voted for Fay and Ashley and more for the latter, because I think, like Alexandra last year, she should go through to the finals so I can see her jive and contemporary again. But she won’t win.
