I wouldn't recommend Belgravia enthusiastically to anyone, even Downton fans. I found it snarkable period drama distraction.
We don't know what he commissioning converation was like, but Fellowes adapted that (completed) Trollope novel for ITV a few years ago. And possibly after Downton, he has no wish to come up with series after series again.
I always thought the point of adapting an unfinished novel was to finish it. Although I do like the way Sanditon ended means I get to write Sidney Parker in all sorts of negative ways ;)
I would have thought so too :) The main example I can think of is Gaskell's Wives and Daughters, but there was more or less only a final chapter missing in that case. Of course, TV is always demanding content. Still, the viewer's frustration is the fanfiction writer's fertile terrain as you say.
