The effects of it on his relationship with Mallory will get brought up again in S2, though we never do find out quite enough in typical WW fashion.

I'm glad to hear this, becuase I'd otherwise be wondering why I should get invested in any of Sam's relationships with anyone outside the staff. And I totally accept your point about Sam's saviour complex. The context for Laurie's loneliness makes sense, and goes some way to explaining why she values their relationship. We could have seen a little more of this in their interaction, but then I previously found that interaction toxic,so...

Martin Sheen is so great in the part.

He really is. I am guilty of taking that for granted.

I'm going to go with every single one after The State Dinner.

I wouldn't argue with that. There isn't a reaction to her having felt that responsiblity for what happened at the siege, and she played a neglible part even over her memo being made public thereafter.

IIRC (so with loads of caveats) I had no idea who had been shot or how badly, and no read on what that would mean.

I feel kind of like the Hrishi to your Josh! I've seen all of these eps dozens of times each, so of course I can pick out favorites with little thought. And quote from memory, sadly.

You definitely are! I thought the show was great, but I could only say I was a fan in the mundane sense. Well, I've dabbled in consuming fanfic and vids. However, as someone who isn't at your level of quotage, I don't think being able to quote this show in pariuclar is sad!
