I am with you on the 'UGH'. Contextually the sexism grates because they're meant to be so progressive... It's worse with Sam than say, Bartlet and Leo's chauvinism, because I can buy that some of that is generational, although Bartlet didn't need to repeat Sam's exact words. Like you, I like Sam, I like Ansley, their interaction - most of the time, but UGH covers it.
I think your analysis about Bartlet's motivations Abbey seeing through to Jed's ambition is entirely plausible, while it suits the staff because of their role and relationships with him to buy into other things motivating him, although they must know at some level that there's ambition there. But in that environment, he doesn't have to face it unless if Abbey makes him.
