Strictly Come Dancing week 7

We were reminded it’s the halfway point in a VT that made me think of hostage videos as, at the producers’ urging, the celeb contestants talked about how awful it is to wait for your name to be called safe and how they’ll work ever so hard to be allowed to keeeeep dancing.

(Poppies everywhere because it’s the BBC.) Tess in a blush dress, Claudia in a suit and tie, Shirley in a sharp white pantsuit, Motsi in black and Anton with a bow-tie. Thank goodness for Craig’s gold jacket.

Cueography and tableography for Adam, while Katya wore the foofiest skirt we may have seen for a jive. There were bits of it that were good (I was impressed by his speed) and bits that left me going ??? Mistakes, the judges called them.

It took me a little while to get into Rose’s samba, possibly because the 60s styling made it feel nothing like a samba until it did. I thought she grew in confidence, and I loved that bit where she was in front and Giovanni was popping out from either side behind her, the contrasting clothes really worked there – this was the bit shown in slo-mo as they came up to Claudia. As required, Rose improved on her Latin, and got herself the best samba score so far in as much as that means anything.

We revisited the weird awkward Tom-Harry Judd, Strictly champion stuff in the VT. Then I was all ‘why the bridge?’ because it wasn’t very bullringy. This was answered when Tom did his first leap. Clever Amy, choreographing a very trad paso - that’s the first proper caping we’ve seen this year, isn’t it? I agreed with Craig about the lack of movement around the floor, although I was thinking of dynamism, but Tom was very good, the judges lurved it and he got his first 10s, a real breakthrough up to the top of the leaderboard.

I thought that was a demanding quickstep routine, with fresh touches, nodding to Rhys’s strengths. Also, I loved Nancy’s dress, and I loved Rhys’s speed too. And then he was disappointed by the judges’ comments over his frame when he’d worked so hard and then surprised by the 9s.

Great concept for the song and the tango, although for me the AR was a little too tricksy. Strong from Tilly, year 2 chess champion, with a little more heat between her and Nikita than I’ve seen before, but she must feel like Rose is her nemesis, because it would be tough to follow THAT tango and Rose got one more for her samba earlier.

I tuned out all the football talk in Dan’s VT. The street commercial couples choice felt naff (especially if you remembered Bill’s or most of last year’s.) and I really did not get the movie stars being casual and then dancing around a lamp post ‘story’. I liked it most wen he was moving, not so much the syncopated bits.

Wise of Johannes to give John the lead, and for him to do the more decorative bits. John reminded me of Kelvin in his physicality. Well done (of course the judges nitpicked, but that’s the rumba for you.)

I loved AJ’s Charleston once they stopped messing abaht with the coat and the sofa. The lifts were off the scale. As for the rest of it, there were about three spots where she was almost not quite in sync with Kai, so I wasn’t surprised it didn’t get a full house, but on the other hand, it was such a demanding routine. Bless her for getting emosh.

It wasn’t just a gimmicky VT for Sara – does the woman ever have time to breathe? I liked the nod of the perm and I thought they had the best colours when we saw all the couples first. Mostly smooth and flying about, and Sara absolutely kept it going throughout, although there were a few raggedy bits, e.g. some slivers of gapping because of the speed.

I can see why they went for that running order, but in hindsight, it might have been better to swop Sara and AJ. Must be noted that the judges were particularly wonderful in the ‘the vote is now OPEn’ bit.

I voted for Rose, Rhys and Tilly, because I though AJ was pretty afe. Tilly was perhaps the person who disappointed us the most on the night (well, Adam made mistakes, but he’s never lived up to his cha cha for me) and that was only because she’s been one of the most consistent. Arguable that Sara underperformed in a quick ballroom. Tom had a breakthrough. I don’t know that the improvement narrative is as tenable with Dan as she show is wishing it was, but he’s more popular than Rhys.
