Domino Day 1.2
This followed on immediately from the previous episode and there was little fat on it storywise, as the nice witch (Sammie?) turned up in the flat, there to help Domino but freaking her out by telling her about a coven knowing who she was and spying on her. Domino lied about what she’d done, naturally. At least the nice witch eventually respected Domino telling her not to touch her without consent, a nice character detail.
But Domino went and made some bad, bad choices, going to a nightclub and turning the tables on one lech by sucking the energy out of him. Rather stupid to stay there and try again, but she clearly wasn’t thinking straight or in control. Juicy back and forth of gender power dynamics, with Domino turning down a nice guy (by meat factory night club standards) but finding a way to entice a racist guy who already seemed to have hooked up with someone so she could steal his energy, and later all the girls, including Jules, taking her side when the male bouncers got in Domino’s face (legitimately, as she’d used magic to push back one of her victims’ male friends.) She followed Jules’s advice and left.
Tensions within the coven, as Kat was keeping her ancestor hotline on the QT, the others reported what they knew of what Domino had done, and they went to Old Fashioned’s flat and saw the pattern left behind when Old Fashioned had been sent elsewhere. I was mainly left still thinking they ought to front up to their doubts about the Elders and Esme, what with all their not wanting to tell her/them about Domino (even though she was clearly more than they could handle), Kat protecting Jules, Geri having helped Kat stop using her traditional banned magic so she could be their leader, and why they didn’t trust the magic shop owner for being too close to the Elders. The scold’s mask said it all.
Small world indeed, as the nice witch possibly called Sammie came to Domino’s place of work, and turned out to have had a brief fling with Dom’s boss. She persuaded Domino to come to the coven’s plant shop so that they could help her. There, Kat betrayed what she’d said and her fellow witches to give her ancestors a looksee into Domino. Totally fair enough that Domino pushed them out and stomped out.
The other witches were angry with Kat for lying to them/using prohibited magic/betraying the safe space the nice witch had offered Dom. They all left Kat to learn that the ancestors had seen no good stuff and much danger in Domino.
Domino turned to Mr Magic Shop, despite being warned about him. He found out she was a lamia (sp?) thanks to Silas’s grimoire and remembering Silas’s past questions, managed to imprison her and, in a cruel twist, locked her up in her memory of Silas being very abusive (and quite powerful.) So, poor Dimino had to shake him off using her power over and over, until she got good and mad enough to break through the spell imprisoning her. This was just before the nice witch arrived with a view to rescuing her. That wasn’t needed, but at least she stopped Domino from killing the magic shop owner, and helped her get out. Domino refused any more help. I don’t know why they bothered showing us Domino’s aura then - it was all blue - as we don’t know how to parse it, (have we seen it before?)
Anyway, everyone now knows Domino is a ‘lamia’ - a powerful entity, banned by the Elders (authoritarian bunch of so-and-sos, aren’t they?) who is dangerous, sucks other people’s life force/powers and can’t control themselves, blah de blah, but Kat’s ancestors said there might be another way other than destruction, which is what the Elders would do.
All the while, Domino had to deal with the fact that she’d sucked the power out of nice Leon and essentially brainwashed him about it (and felt much worse about it than about her other victims, although what she’d done to Old Fashioned was freaking her out more.) Leon continued to be lovely, charming, respectful and hot, but clueless. She’d agreed to a second date with him, but, after the very bad day summarised above, where I could always see where she was coming from, she told him she couldn’t do it, she was bad news, and he was still respectful but sad.
Less likely to be so? Silas, who’d been skulking in corners/appearing in torture spells all episode. Now, he was there ready to talk to Domino and not in a ‘let’s have a friendly chat’ way. Eek!
