The age of our current candidates is a bit of an anomaly. When those episodes were written, Vinick's age would've been a sticking point. Reagan's obvious Alzheimer's before he left office was a big deal in political circles and even if Bush Sr was iirc the 4th oldest of all time, Clinton, Shrub, Obama... a legacy of relative youth.
