shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Nashville irresistible Juliette Barnes)

Back to Nashville

I caught up on Nashville 3.1 That’s Me without You last night.

The start of this episode was a little bit too busy trying to get us all caught up (I read my review of the season 2 finale like it was homework, so I was good to go.) I wasn’t convinced that the 12 hours earlier device, which is overused in general, added much, except confusion about Juliette’s dramatic hair-cutting (another overused trope). In short, Rayna is in a triangle with two proposals, and only Tandie to give her advice, Juliette is still in a meltdown over Avery, Scarlett is so not leaving the city, Layla isn’t yet in a place to see that Will being gay and using her more than she used him is going to make great material for songs down the road, poor kid, and Maddie is cross with her father/a teenager and shipping Rayna/Deacon, while Daphne is an excellent advocate for her sister.

Ugh, Oliver Hudson is still a regular, which means Jeff Fordham is hanging around.

Lots of everybody asking everybody else how they felt in this episode.

Aw, despite Avery’s genuine heartbreak and hurt, the road-trip was very amusing, even the line where Avery said he thought Scarlett would find a better guy, and Gunnar ambles into the scene. (I would sacrifice Scarlett/Gunnar romance for Juliette/Avery to work out, as I’ve said before, although, musically, Scarlett/Gunnar is my favourite. And my feelings about Rayna/Deacon are that it’s less epic than the show thinks it is) I think it was a good idea to go for comedy, because Scarlett turning back was so inevitable.

Speaking of on the nose, I can see why having Juliette audition for ‘The Patsy Cline Story’ and getting the role because of parallels appealed, but even though Panettiere can act up, down and sideways and her voice has probably improved with training, she’s not a good enough singer for her cover of ‘Crazy’ to feel anything but lightweight.

I can’t believe Luke was this understanding with his ex. Rayna was very...tanned in this episode. The most striking thing about the flashback!montage for me was that Luke too got dragged into the bad wigs. (Unimpressed by the singing so far, guys.)

So, Juliette’s haircut really didn’t have a good reason for it. I knew that Panettiere was pregnant and was spoiled for them writing it in for Juliette so I was underwhelmed by the revelation.

Aww, Luke, Rayna’s probably going to break your heart, and until then, Maddie is going to give you such a hard time as Teddy’s stepped up on the father front and Deacon can write songs.
