The Secret Adversary part 3

Confirmation came that I was right about Brown’s identity as Tommy and Tuppence and, indeed, the show bumbled about. The big thing at the start of the episode was Tuppence knowing something was off in the returned Tommy and getting him to confide in her so that they could be squeezed together. Tommy was a little more competent generally, and they found the recording, only to lose it in two seconds flat. Cue the lover not uncle business with Julius, a staircase chase (bet the actors loved that) and saving the day so that Tuppence could return the ring to Tommy. I thought they should have held on a second longer before the dissolve from the view from the country house to Tommy rescuing Jane.

The tonal shifts and anachronistic dialogue continue. Walliams and others bring slightly the wrong kind of comedy in, and I actually think Matthew Steer, who plays Albert, has more chemistry with Jessica Raine’s Tuppence. But even though it doesn’t quite work with what it sets out to achieve, it’s oddly entertaining. Someone did get whacked by a cricket bat, after all!

Last night, I ended up watching parts of New Tricks with a family member (their choice) and discovered that Tamsin Outhwaite was basically playing Rebecca Flint again, only with the help of the detecting skills of old coppers, not mysterious science. Also, 1995’s Wickham turned up, playing a crook, which felt apt. I couldn’t get past Nicholas Lyndhurst’s character’s posh accent.
