the DC show
Gotham 2.2 Knock Knock
Not that I’m caught up, because the next episode has just aired.
Stylish. Still loving Jerome and evil Barbara (so maybe she’s going to be the one who Selina sees using the whip, and WHAT kind of influence is she going to have on Ivy?), as the boyband Maniax is put together by Svengali Theo, and young Jerome turns out to be the Harry Styles of the group, with his young Joker tendencies.
Jim is tasked with bringing them back in, because he’s a detective now with a bit of a guilty conscience, and you could practically see the clock ticking down above Essen’s head as she had hope in him.
Also predictable? That Harvey wouldn’t stay a barman for long – I could have liked Scotty if...she let her fiancé speak and make his own mind up about stuff.
Also predictable? Jim not stopping and thinking about the motive of targeting the shipping company. Worst. Detective. Et cetera.
Also predictable? That Bruce and Alfred’s big melodramatic fight over the computer in the proto Bat cave wouldn’t last long. Though I did like that Alfred turned to Lucius Fox, and after all the storytime, it was basically about Alfred needing help to fix the computer. Although Lucius absolutely said the right thing about not wanting to harm Bruce. Bruce is told to waaaaaaait.
But the crazies/protosupervillains are putting on a show. Seriously, Theo might have the mayor in his pocket and might be able to control his ‘sister’ and the Maniax for now, but for how long?
It was mainly watching the line between the gaucheness, the crazy and the Joker forming in front of our eyes that was the most entertaining thing about the ep, and though the business cheerleaders in the bus was meh (I was a little less sympathetically inclined after seeing them standing to practise in a moving bus, the twerps), the Maniax'ssecret concertvisit to the police station was brilliant, particularly Essen watching all the cops she’d just taken responsibility for felled, her encounter with Jerome and all his momma issuer and her ferocity. That was a good send-off (although it's one fewer female character).
I also liked the Barbara-Jim encounter. Psycho ex-girlfriend, indeed. (Lee, run! They need to give her a relationship with Gotham, methinks.)
Nygma and his split personalities = zzzzz.
So, we end with Harvey back where he should be, GPCD with more non-officers than cops, an alliance between Alfred, Lucius and Bruce, and more than a hint of the Joker that Jerome will become – although I am worried that the show can’t keep him up at this pitch. Presumably they’ll realise that a little goes a long way and throw him back into Arkham.
Looking forward to see what Penguin and the established mob make of these rivals and Theo keep his promise and let Barbara do something. But not enough to watch the episode last night, after coming home quite wiped out, partly because of length and tone, partly because I wanted this episode to settle in my mind for a few days.
I rewatched Sherlock. I might do a little dive into the fandom to find some reactions to the new canon - meta so I don't have to bother, and maybe fic. It's still the case that my strongest feels are about the brothers' relationship!?!?
