Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD 3.07 Chaos Theory

Well, that was emotional for the characters, especially May.

The opening was effective in filling up the gaps about Andrew-Lash, and I liked the moment’s check that May had been out of the Lash loop – I thought she should have given someone the intel about where she was going, but she left enough crumbs for the team for when things went awry.

I worried for a moment that Bobbi was going to tell Hunter she was pregnant. I liked that she chose not to go for revenge and let it consume them – Ward isn’t theirs to bag as second season arrivistes, I’ve always felt, anyway. And Hunter, if that beautiful woman of yours asks you something, don’t be an idiot. (He is an idiot, but I hope not on this.)

It almost felt like Ward got the sting simply because he hadn’t been in the episode, but then there was the reveal that Rosalind was in cahoots with Ward’s powerful baddie fixer.

Sadly, show, I hadn’t started trusting Rosalind, for all that I thought she made some valid points when discussing what ACTU were doing with Inhumans with Daisy. Sure, I was irritated that she got to help Coulson with the tie and by where I could see they were going with the banter, but a) I loved Phil just giving Melinda the keys to free herself, because of course she’d be able to and doesn’t need rescuing and b) the line that she didn’t need him to go after him now. I’ll take that as the show playing the long game, as Melinda/Andrew imploded. Have we ever seen her be as emotional?

But at least it wasn’t her fault! That’s got to be a tiny relief, even if most of SHIELD didn’t seem to think that as Lash Andrew had become a killer of people going about their business and even if he wasn’t ‘himself’ or if ‘himself’ was transitioning into something different, it wasn’t a sickness, per se. I don’t think he can get his life back when he’s taken so many others on his own judgment. Not killing Daisy, but killing so many others?

So, I was entirely with Lincoln for asking who made him judge, jury and executioner (but ditto ACTU and SHIELD). I was very approving of Lincoln being smart and paranoid enough to figure out Lash’s connection to SHIELD after attempting to get in touch with Afterlife people (the Inhuman the other week who SHIELD hunted down must have come after. I bet the scriptwriters have been updating a timeline for all this, of which I approve mightily.) I was also amused that he turned to Mac – his opinions of Inhumans and aliens has to be adjusting slightly, right? – and impressed by the logic. But because Lash had killed Linc’s friends and he’s had no training, maybe they shouldn’t have taken him along to bring down Andrew.

Fortunately, Melinda was there and she was ace, especially after the lacerating discovery of what had happened to Andrew, what he’d become – and the attempt to compare it to Barhain was feeble. Poor love. Her headspace right now...and that she turned to Daisy for help in the decision making – there was the echo of Ward in Andrew or the impact on Skye-Daisy and Melinda...

More Fitz/Simmons fodder this episode. I really object to Jemma thinking Leo was smarter than her; it’s just that he’s smart about other things. Er, shouldn’t she wait to rescue Will and see how she feels then? I’m not the biggest shipper for Fitzsimmons, but the idea of him hearing messages where he was her lifeline and, as she faced her lonely death, she shared about a life they could have lived was touching. To a large degree this was because of how De Casesteker played Leo's reactions, but also that we too had watched much of what he was watching. Still, I was glad that Fitz, at least, recognised that this wasn’t the moment to resolve anything relationship-wise.

When they do rescue Will, he is really not going to understand why Hunter is so mean to him.
