In which Parks and Rec is a nice Saturday breakfast show
Parks and Recreation
5.5
The end of this episode caused much hand-flapping. I didn’t expect the proposal at this point – even though I have been spoiled that Leslie and Ben get married, seeing as this show aired in the States twenty five years ago (Donna, so down with it with her live-tweeting this episode. Will she ever live-tweet anything else again?). But Ben got to Jerry’s life lesson all on his own, possibly inspired by April rushing back to Pawnee and Andy.
Several ‘Oh no, Ron, don’t’ moments as he failed at dealing with kids. Lawless was great, and Diane can totally stand up to him, although she’s a little lacking in the eccentricity and probably would fold in the face of the Tammys. Also, she was wearing an ugly cardigan at one point.
Leslie pimped out Ann, or tried to, again. Good for Ann for running away from that.
Did Jerry’s whole heart attack come about because someone had read or heard about the flatulence? They managed to walk the wire with him being touching/desperate (but then Chris got to be mostly desperate).
Has tiny Tom finally fallen on a realistic business plan?
Katherine Hahn was great. Good they brought her back.
But mainly, Leslie was so sad as his career politics seemed likely to steal Ben away from her even more, and he seemed so tempted, and she was so sad in the house she’d danced in, so it was a lovely, lovely proposal scene after a pretty good episode.

It’s so much better to have Ben (pulling faces at the camera – Ann and everyone do it, but not so much) and April (mainly being vicious to Ann) back in Pawnee.
They played the engagement reactions beautifully, especially nearly everyone pre-emptively taking Leslie’s side, and then moved us on to meeting Ben’s parents, which put Marlene in a better light, at least.
I hope Chris gets over his existential angst/emotional volatility a little. I’d even put up with Chris/Ann for that.
And it was great that they developed Rent-a-swag. Er, Jean-Ralphio’s recap of his night reminded me of Andy’s observation training in the previous episode, only with more singing.
Yes, finding out you’re going to have a half-sibling on your engagement party is weird, but Ben finding Leslie’s unity quilting hot bodes well for them.
