Stuff from Sunday
I posted a ficlet Rain (Sky High, Layla/Warren, PG). It’s 400 words long, but I suppose it’s more accurate to describe it as a linked drabble and triple drabble. The theme at
comment_fic was 100 words. I wrote 100 words, and then thought about what would happen next, which is teased in the opening drabble. It became obvious it would take longer than another 100 words, and then more than 200…
Howards End 3/4
TRULY a Downtonesque plot-twist. Of all the women in England and of all the men in England… But between Margaret knowing the chauffeur’s name and the tents on the lawn for the wedding, and the strong hints of the clips from the next episode, even if this is set earlier and had a more serious purpose, well, it must have been an influence on Downton.
Helen was the worst example of the awful offspring (despite Charles’s best attempts, in particular), what was she thinking? Yes, I was on her side when she first accosted Mr Wilcox and he blanked her, but bringing the Basts to his daughter’s wedding!? If she wanted to do some good more than she wanted to vent some outrage, she’d have seen there were a dozen better things she could have done.
Margaret seemed to have some idea of what she’d let herself in for – her opinion being ignored, certain feelings being trampled over, the tyranny of her husband, for not being alone and matrimony with the potential of love. Watching her wander around Howards End would have been lovely if they hadn’t drawn it out a teensy bit too much.
If it hadn’t been for the clips from the next episode, I would have been a little confused about what was happening next between Helen and Leonard. A few points on that, he isn’t as good looking as canon claims (sorry, actor), also are Leonard and Jackie married now, because my assumption was that they weren’t before, partly because of his age, and if he’d lost his position, it seems unlikely they’d have got round to it. For me, Helen has been really bad about acknowledging that Leonard has pride, so this is a weird way of feeding his ego, also, he’s not that hot, ALSO his sick wife/’wife’ was in the next room. CLASSY.
I laughed very loud at Margaret declaring she had £600 a year. I have the vaguest idea of how much that was worth then, but the fact and the way she did it and Henry’s reaction tickled me. This may go down as the episode where I take this adaptation less seriously.

Of course Oti got to Beyonce all over the opening pro dance and mime the inevitable Vogue. It got camper and camper, but Bruno taking all the applause felt wrong, because it had all been about Oti, really.
Best series of dresses from them all, I grew less enamoured of the fit of Tess’s top as the ep went on, but nice colour; within the limited confines of what Claudia’s comfortable wearing, that was nice; Shirley’s dress was great (and she had a great episode) and I’ve got nothing against the fit and crispness of Darcey’s dress either.
Oti got to present the recap, which had to cover the pasodoblethon last, in which I noticed Shirley gave ‘Alexandra’ a Spanish pronunciation.
Cue the results. Mollie was saved by doing a dance within her capabilities well and probably the ‘showmance’. Joe was obviously safe, but…Alexandra. As the pasodoblethon meant nothing to the viewers, the fact that she was tied in the middleish with Davood told against her. (Bless Shirley for having her head in her hands.) Alexandra was obviously gutted at the vote collapse.
Kelly Clarkson’s song was meh, Gorka and Janette’s dancing turned into a liftathon, inevitably, but KC’s voice was great and her enthusiasm at the end reminded me of why I <3 her.
Cue the second half of the results and mounting tension as to whether Alexandra would have to face the only one who could beat her – Davood. And there was tension as to whether Susan’ and Kevin’s fanbase would stand up.
WELL DONE, STRICTLY VIEWERS.
I loved Susan for not even pretending to think she had a chance. I will do her the compliment of saying I watched her second try as well as Alexandra’s (the spin in their rumba definitely became a lift this time.) Articulate speeches and a better ‘last dance’ than usual.
Next week, the one that is not that different from movie week, with Alexandra’s confidence having suffered a knock. I hope Debbie McGee’s mother is also there.
