The Mentalist

The Mentalist 5.15 Red Lacquer Nail Polish

Not getting the significance of the title (again) as it pertains to the case of the week.

Gross opening, lampshaded. I did get whodunit or rather that Elise was not dead and had killed Lissie, but I think the fact that I was taking breaks to prepare food instead of watching this through helped with that. Jane had fun and as he got to get on the boat early to smoke the killer out, it was somewhat inevitable that he’d then get back to his obsession. Meanwhile Cho calling Rigsby out on his Van Pelt pining was fun until the cartoonish ending with all the dates Wayne had stood up. I half thought Erick Avari had been on this show as someone else before. Oh, and I enjoyed seeing a half-competent lawyer in the room with a suspect, even if he believed his client was guilty. Funny how entitlemnet became trust in due process.

Demand five allowed me to see the whole episode! I counted that as a win and then went on to watch the next episode live.

5.16 There Will Be Blood

Also started disgustingly with Lorelei (formally Lisbon manqué, now Bad!Lisbon; I can’t believe they never mentioned the similarity) torturing someone. So, it was a Red John episode, as highlighted by the OTT set-up of the final scene (I spent most of it peering at her arm to see if the bullet wound was visible. I think make-up screwed up the continuity there, because even if it was two weeks later, she didn’t have superhealing.) And as it was an RJ episode, I was mainly disappointed that there would be no hi-jinx. They did squeeze in a bit of Rigsby-Cho business, but it was mainly poor Rigsby with the pining and getting injured, and for all the sprightly music as Jane prowled around, it was grim.

But thanks to the deadening effect of the start of season 4, I care a great deal less. All the intensity of the scenes between Jane and Lisbon about what he’d do and what she’d do – and I thought both actors brought it – was watched at a distance, really.

I remember that the Homeland Security guy is in cahoots with someone, but don’t quite recall whether it was Red John or Polly Walker’s FBI person. This was about the only thing the show didn’t exposit for us.

I see that OUAT is coming back to five (yay!) in the Person of Interest slot (must catch up on that).
