HOD: somewhat misleading episode title
Hart of Dixie - 3.20 Together Again
This episode went hard for the wacky shenanigans, although beneath some of them were genuine pain. Wade was still blaming Zoe for ruining things with cowardly Vivian, and instead of giving him space and time, Zoe wanted him to forgive her then and there. Lemon was blaming George for the C rating, Wanda had had her period and responded by saying she didn’t want to try for children any more, but had started putting their kid goat in a romper and pram. Oh, and Shelby returned with her cute little baby.
Because a restaurant reviewer had raved about a competitor, Lemon demanded that George find him and make him review Fancie’s to make up for his misdemeanours. Zoe, hearing about it, thought that if she got the reviewer to write up the Rammer-Jammer again, Wade would forgive her, and so she stalked George, who’d tried to work out where ‘Walter Rawlins’ was likely to go next. They thought they’d found him.
Lemon, who’d apparently been checking up on mopey Wade daily, (aww) said they should take a day off. As she absolutely wouldn’t go with him to a strip club, they ended up at a taxidermist cum restaurant (oh Wade, oh show) where they bumped into ‘Walter Rawlins’. Or rather Walter Rawlins, for it really was him.
Meanwhile, Tom had begged Brick to help with Wanda, who’d claimed her fertility drugs had made her act crazy, but was acting crazy right now. (Poor goat.) When Shelby turned up, Brick suggested they drop her baby off with TomnWanda and catch up at dinner, as Zoe was off work for plot shenanigans. At Fancie’s, Shelby said she wanted to get back together with him (again?) because her platonic babydaddy was busy and her baby cried and she was tired. But Brick, after some time apart, was no longer a soft touch and said no.
Lemon still reacted strongly when she saw them in Fancie’s, but both Fancie’s and the R-J charmed the food reviewer. This whole strand was great because Jamie King and Wilson Bethell bounce off each other marvellously. I am so pleased that the show discovered this, and returns to Lemon and Wade’s friendship every now and then, because it’s great. Lemon would even get the best truth bomb, where she astutely pointed out that Wade was giving Zoe a hard time unfairly because of Zoe’s power over him.
The Zoe-George on the road throughline was less successful. It was a shade wackier, given what they did when they thought they’d found ‘Walter Rawlins’, who turned out to be a car thief, forcing them to walk home, sans phone. The reveal of Zoe’s wholly impractical footwear was worth a smile. The Truitt brothers turned up and there was some nonsense about that. Zoe essayed a fakeout makeout with George to escape. He wanted to talk about it later, but they agreed to be just friends because they had to do something different to George drunkenly sleeping with her and obsessing about it for a couple of episodes, because they’d just done that with George/Lemon. Also, he tried to get Zoe to admit she was very invested in getting Wade to forgive her For Reasons. Which she wouldn’t, but we know is true. I raised my eyebrows more at Zoe trying to claim that George is still carrying a torch for Lemon. Stop pretending THAT’s endgame, show.
The crying baby was not changing Wanda’s mind, but when Tom started singing at her and Wanda joined in, ‘Shelby’s baby’ became all quiet sweetness, and Brick and Shelby had quite the job retrieving her from Wanda’s clutches. Wanda agreed to set up a visit with Brick to help with the trying with the baby.
In a completely unrelated, but perfectly adequate plotline, AB finally had to introduce ex Lavon to new beau Davis, just before her parents came to meet with the latter. It was played as the parents and Lavon having missed each other and hanging out on behind AB’s back, while Davis tried hard to impress them. AB had to sort it all out as the usual voice of reason, coming back to the fact that Lavon had no right to be dog in the mangerish. This ended with her parents giving Davis the time of day, and as he is clearly into AB, so they should. (We learned he also does a podcast about DIY, which is less endearing.) He’s just there, neither obnoxious nor scintillating, for me.
The episode ended with Lemon bragging to a tired George about getting the review without his help. He just yelled at her to get out of his boathouse. (I would have liked some mention of reporting the theft of his truck etc to the police.) Wade and Zoe had a similar encounter, where she, tired and crabby, gave up on trying to be nice to him, and we were back to Wade and Zoe bickering at each other, which is quite a happy place for us shippers.
AB was looking good with the hints of pink in her dress, earrings and make-up, and Lemon wore some nifty outfits. In contrast, Zoe’s aesthetic is always too much. While we’re at it, Lavon’s hat of the episode was a subtly jaunty shape.
