Catch-up post no. 4 IThe Good Wife)

The Good Wife season 4 finale - watched live, of course, but I wanted to post about stuff in order.

So good (as I’ve said a lot after watching this show over the years). I enjoyed the case as much as I was meant to, with the sleep deprivation, the quirks of judge, opposing counsel and witnesses, the race against the clock, the theatrics of it versus Alicia having to deal with Zack as a witness. And then shook my head over the various frauds going on. Because of course Eli and his henchman were behind it. The episode had me going, despite my previously well worked out rationalisations, wondering if Peter would actually lose it, or Eli would lose it by getting rid of his replacement...

Because the personal stuff – Grace not trusting her mother with Will, rightly as it turned out (much better kiss than the last time) and Peter’s FACE as he realised that Alicia wasn’t in the moment with him. With her not having to pick Peter up and having agreed to talk to Will, the final scene was tantalising –I was hoping it was going to be Will, worried that Peter would turn up and had got as far as hoping it wasn’t Colin Sweeney – but it was another choice entirely. (Although didn’t Peter stand her the money to buy into Lockhart & Gardner, so he’d feel entitled to be part of the discussion).

This leaves things fabulously up in the air, looking as if they’ll fall in an entirely different fashion – Peter and Eli (and Diane) in office; Alicia and Cary (and the fourth years) and Robin? venturing forth with Sweeney; and Will and Kalinda [who I basically think of as Bogie and Rains at the end of Casablanca] with angry partners and David Lee. Woah. I don’t see how they could have Diane try any of their cases, though – WHICH IS A PROBLEM. But Alicia and Cary facing off against Will? Tasty. Think of Canning et al’s reaction???

And the personal is still unresolved – will Alicia renew her vows with Peter? Even if she does, they’ll sound hollow to him. As they should if she’s not involving him in discussions about her future – I’m not saying that the decision about her career should be anyone’s but hers, but not to talk about it? ALSO her choice to leave, which may be influenced by putting distance between her and Will, although it’s also the appeal of being in charge and doing things differently (although as Cary starting to learn, yeah, not so easy), is going to affect their conversation, if they have it, even if they have it before he finds out about the new firm. Also, by having Zack vote, we were reminded that the kids are growing up fast, so how Alicia is a mother is going to have to change.

Which reminds me, all the Jackie stuff was awesome, because Peter’s behaviour was a wee bit Freudian and deserved a smackdown. I was entertained that Christian (sp?) just cashed the cheque.

And then there was Kalinda. She seemed genuinely hurt by what Cary had done, although maybe it was a convenient excuse. It’ll be interesting if they explore that, and I’m glad that it looks like they’re continuing to develop Cary. Because that’s been a thing I’ve loved about season 4.

(But I sort of need Diane and Kurt to be happy somewhere in the mix.)

I didn’t expect Alicia leaving the firm, because a new and extra set and the show revolves around her and the firm. That they might be willing to shake things up so drastically – not just having Cary do the latest iteration of ‘in/out’ – is exciting. Of course, it might all fall flat. I desperately want to know what happens next. Will they carry on where they left off or move forward quite some time?

I loved that Alicia switched on the gift from John Noble's character and other callbacks, some of which I likely missed.
