Still catching up...(OUaT)

I did, in fact, watch this on the tellybox on Sunday.

2.12 In the name of the brother

Mixed feelings about this ep. I’ve never read Frankenstein or seen an adaptation, so I have no idea how much of that was faithful/twisted, although I certainly don’t mind watching David Anders be angsty as a bearded Minnelli played his father. Also, the potential for Ruby/Whale, the monster and the man who created one and became one, was immense.

But that Snow noticed that Whale reeked of alcohol (and Charming hadn’t, bless) was wrong given that Ruby is a werewolf with the enhanced sense of smell. No wonder she couldn’t find Regina (well, okay, textually that’s cause Madam had bunkered up in the most lusciously decorated hideout).

And I have a lot of beef with how Belle was treated too. While healed, she was clearly distressed and everyone was informed she’d crossed the boundary and lost her memory. Snow stuck with her for a few seconds, then basically dropped her to be there where the action was. Yes, Hook and the stranger (Greg Mendel can't be a meaningless name, not on this show) were threats to Storybrooke, but come on, your majesty. And surely someone (Ruby seeing as they’d stuck up a friendship) should have been at Belle’s side at the hospitable – buffering her from Rumpelstiltskin’s understandable but unwise attempts to get her to remember. I was touched by the attempt to use true love’s kiss while assuming it would all go wrong. You can’t blame someone with amnesia for freaking out at being kissed by a stranger to them! The attendants who came in to remove him should have been there or told someone in Emma’s party about what had happened so that someone was there to stop the second visit.

No wonder Rumpelstiltskin needed to threaten the Charmings to protect Belle.

Oh, Chip. Even though I am starting to have issues with Rumpelstiltskin/Belle (see my response to the last episode – it was always going to be problematic to sell her as good and loving and square that with her response to all that he’d done), smashing Chip made me sad.

Then with the injured Mendel, after Rumpelstiltskin said no, why did no one think of the Blue Fairy/Mother Superior? She does magic, and could have healed him (good thing) and might have been prevailed upon to cast a memory spell (less good thing). She should have been mentioned. I know why they didn’t do it - too big a cast, although Leroy didn’t add much except for a different point of view and the running gag about everyone thinking he coul do stuff...he couldn’t.

Some tensions among the posse of sheriffs/Charming family, but good to see Emma in action. I love Hook flirting so hard and she’s so not impressed. Her ability to spot a lie seems to have gone flying out of the window. Again. Only to return when the plot needs it.

Listing someone as ‘Her’ on your mobile is really weird, isn’t it?

Regina can’t be trusting Cora, CAN SHE? Cora can’t be for real, CAN SHE? I need some clarification on what Cora thinks her daughter is going to do – this could be a plan of revenge for thwarting her, because the apology for forcing Regina to marry the king didn’t ring true for me. I merely point out that I think that if Cora touches a hair on Henry’s head, her daughter will go ballistic. (Not to mention bring on the wrath of the Charmings.)

But they are going to explore Rumpelstiltskin-Cora’s backstory.

Cool magic globe.

I have a horrid fear that Neal may turn out to be Bae. I really do wonder what August showed him in the box (and, idly, what has happened to August. After all the writerly overinvestment in him last season, it seems odd to have had so little of him.)

Henry’s realisation that Frankenstein wasn’t from the same world was a step in the grand scheme of things. Of course, we’re ahead of the characters because we know Regina drew in who she wanted into her curse. More flashbacks will explain why and who.

Looking up the episode title, I was spoiled for something that happens in the next episode, but for once I don’t mind, because it seems like it could be fantastic and it made me laugh.
