shallowness: bright flowers in vase against green background (flowers that remind me of Layla)

All caught up

And this is the other TV that I watched but hadn't posted about.

Nashville 1.19 Why Don’t You Love Me

I watched it on 4oD on Wednesday night, I appreciated that some of the acting (Pannetiere especially) was good and noted that the plot was moving on nicely with ramifications to previous episodes and new developments. I realised that even though we got Juliette-Avery interaction, if I wait long enough I might get Juliette/Liam. I enjoyed Scarlett’s honesty and thought the Rayna/Deacon developments weren’t stupid, while having quite enough drama, plus I was glad Stacey got a moment to show another way to deal with relationships – Colman’s advice to Deacon, like Tandy’s to her sister, to be wary wasn’t bad advice, but telling Deacon to run back to Stacey wasn’t fair on Stacey. Oh, and Maddy’s acting her age was another nice ingredient. But it was like I was watching it from far away – partly because I was tired, partly because I don’t love the show.

Why? I don’t know. I don’t love the genre of music, although I have really enjoyed some of the songs. It’s a soapy drama, which I can enjoy in certain circumstances - off the top of my head, I'm thinking of ER or The Good Wife or Ugly Betty as it's ridiculous cousin - but being invested in characters is a big part of it. While I don’t hate any of the characters, although I don’t mind it when Avery, Teddy and Lemar get their dues, do I really, really care about these characters?

The ones I care about the most are Scarlett/Gunnar, who I loved when he was pining and she was pretending to be oblivious, and am now a bit unenthused about the show's handling of their relationship and the tensions therein, because I feel some of it's contrived, when there are more realistic issues that the show ignores. But I am rooting for them to get through it until they sing together again.

However, I know that Scarlett is the no. 3 lady after the big two and Scarlett/Gunnar’s function is to serve as a shadow couple for Rayna/Deacon. I like Rayna – why wouldn’t I, she’s played by Tami Taylor, er Connie Britton, and she’s a grown-up woman who you want to be creative and to do the best for her children and find happiness? I’m more pro Rayna/Deacon than against it, but I don’t passionately care about their true love like the show wants me to be.

I like that having two main female characters gives us all-female familial relationships to examine. I understand where Juliette is coming from with her diva ways. There is more of a spark when the new country-pop star clashes with the established queen of country. I can see that, but I have never felt that I needed to watch an episode live. I just get around to it when I do. I could have watched the next episode, but decided to put it off and will do a double bill whenever I do a double bill.

The Mindy Project 1.14

The Valentine’s episode had: Mindy going crazy at the Empire State; post break-up Danny; Jeremy playing Cyrano for Morgan; Mindy wading further into Jamie-and-Lucy – she would! - you could see where it was going, well, actually I could see where it was going in last week’s episode, but the double date was nicely set up. And as Mindy kind of knew it too, always testing Jamie, we could enjoy the journey, enlivened by BJ Novak’s physical comedy chops – was that a Singin’ in the Rain or a My Fair Lady reference?

I had a nice flashback to Lynda/Spike (yeah, I have no truck with Sleepless in Seattle) when Danny turned up early and critiqued the outfit. Plus there was all the Mindy/Danny touching! And the ways in which you could see them sharing their life together, bickering over what TV they’d watch and what they’d do with rooms, even if they couldn’t see it. And they obviously aren't in Jamie-and-Lucy everyone assumed they were a couple territory. But we even ended with a Mindy-Danny moment where he was seeing the bigger picture and trying to share that vision with her. Aww.

So a pretty funny episode and plenty to enjoy as a shipper too.
