Self-promotion and Étoile
I reposted a ficlet yesterday: That Cooper Family Christmas Feeling, The O.C. PG. 280 words. Kaitlin, gen. Summary: Alt!world Kaitlin’s Christmas Eve night. AU. Post 4.07. ‘The Christmukk-huh?’ (March 2007)
Very seasonal! (Or not.) Very niche, as it expands a bit on the alt world Ryan and Taylor visited. Lightly edited from the original version.
Étoile 1.1 The Swap
Me a few weeks ago: Why is YouTube promoting this trailer at me?
Me last week: OH, it’s an Amy Sherman-Palladino project about ballet (never did get to see Bunheads) on Prime.
Me after watching the trailer: Oh, I am so watching this.
This is me after watching the first episode.
I really enjoyed it. I laughed a lot at the larger than life (somewhat caricatured) characters and their witty dialogue, but I loved the reverence for ballet, not to mention the rehearsal scenes and the occasional scenes of people just dancing.
The cast is such fun. I think I love force-of-nature Cheyenne. I was also reassured by the amount of French spoken – in the trailer I did not get why Genevieve and Cheyenne were not speaking French when alone together, but it worked better in the broader context. And SIMON CALLOW as a very rich man trying to do balletwashing. Also Charlotte Gainsbourg, David Haig, and Michel off the Gilmore Girls (please let Kelly Bishop cameo, PLEASE.) I haven’t seen much of Luke Kirby before. So far, I have seen none of the ‘Ah, they cast you for the dancing’ levels of acting seen in Center Stage.’
I mean it is probably crossing the line when it comes to lazy stereotypes of the French, (even if it’s for a culture clash!) of the eccentricities of ballet dancers. The cleaner’s little girl who loves to dance so much that she sneaks in and practices at night is a cliché. But I loved the latter, because it was a counterpoint to the argument that COVID had ruined the pipeline (also the nod to Lorelai and Rory) and how her encounter played out with Cheyenne.
I mean, you do have to watch it with a determination not to think about the current cultural vandalism That Man is wreaking in the US, but it mostly gives enough that you don’t mind doing so. Well, I didn’t.
