OUAT 2.17 Welcome to Storybrooke

Perhaps some of the elements of this would have worked better if they’d been deployed in other ways, and yet, I had more Regina feelings than usual, though there was lots of head-shaking at her too.

It made sense that she got bored very quickly with her Groundhog Day cursed!Storybrooke (hi Sherriff Grahame; sigh, droopy Mary-Margaret). It made me feel sympathetic all over again for all the cursed folk – and I loved that they had the mouse!mechanic back. I barely took in that the kid’s name was Owen, because I was dubbing him proto-Henry, although it would be quite some time after this – and this was twenty years after Emma arrived here - before Regina thought about adopting, surely.

I was almost disappointed that Owen turned out to be car crash guy (so Greg Mendel is totally a made up name) because it’s a revelation that’s in keeping with too many revelations on this show. I still think that the most interesting thing about him is ‘Her’. Who she?

Other questions: what happened to his father? Will we go back to this period to find out how Gold got Rumpelstiltskin’s memories back (if he really had lost them, although I suspect he wouldn’t have been able to resist showing off his knowledge to Regina)? Will the show explain what’s always puzzled me, namely how Henry grew up in a town where no other kids did and nothing changed?

I also find myself wanting more on Gepetto and Pinnochio/August, and hey, to know what’s happening to Mulan and Aurora.

This is a bad sign WRT what the show is choosing to focus on.

For yes, it makes a change that it's mothers in general popculture terms - although it comes from the fairy tales themselves, we had dead mothers, mothers who make mistakes and mother figures everywhere.

Generally bad handing of Henry by the characters. There’s a middle way between lying to him and talking about killing people that doesn’t lead to a kid lugging dynamite about town. I was amused by Regina just making it disappear in a puff of smoke (but noted that she took the car instead of teleporting to the trail). I was also howling at her that she and Henry already have something. Telling (if clunky) that after all that, he ran to Emma (not Regina nor his father) for comfort. Has Regina clocked Neal/Baelfire yet?

Carlyle was solid throughout, but the final scene with Snow was powerful. And then she went off impulsively AGAIN because she felt so bad (the black spot in the heart was interesting, but I don’t think they’d thought it through entirely WRT previous characters) and made herself vulnerable to Regina, who I thought was just going to control her heart.

I do share a little of Henry’s response to what Snow did, I suppose.
