Clones defying gravity

On Thursday, I caught up with Orphan Black 1.4 Effects of External Conditions

>Wow. I thought that they were racheting it up unnecessarily by having a child witness crazy Helena carrying out self-surgery, but of course he could pass on a message to Sarah and tie into Kira seeing right through Alison. I loved that by the end of the episode I was feeling much more sympathetic towards both Helena and Auntie Alison – who needs to put her foot down and point out that it is a big deal that Kira is biologically Sarah’s (I should have put my ‘hang on, those kids don't look like Alison’ thought together with ‘or her husband’). Obviously, I’m glad Sarah didn’t blow Helena’s disturbed brains out – although how long can she last? – but getting off the force probably isn’t going to be enough to take the pressure off now that there’s definitely a conspiracy on.

And given what Helena told her about Maggie Chen, I hope Sarah took the case files.

ALSO Beth’s backstory is considerably more murky than we thought. Is Paul’s? I will say that Art is mighty controlling even if Sarah-as-Beth is acting weirdly and suspiciously, probably after Beth was acting weirdly.

I enjoyed the reverse Pygmalion and the games they were playing with the performing – with Helena being Sarah being Beth at one point. But Sarah doesn’t know how different she is, however, despite being rubbish at putting on gloves (one of many nice details about the performance) she is putting herself out there for the other clones (and herself, Kira and Felix by extension).

I like being able to trust a show with it’s conspiracies...I generally don’t let myself do that!

Agents of SHIELD

A little better. I really liked the opening, the nod to the wild West (although there was no need to lampshade it), the look of the gravitonium or whatever it was called and its effects, and thought Skye handled herself pretty well on her mission. I agree with musesfool (I think it was her) that it would have been more effective if Melinda had mentored Skye. Less tension (or forced UST that may yet tone down into legitimate UST, because I saw glimpses of it between Ward and Skye, but I wouldn’t descrube them as a couple that’s bursting with chemistry). In the real world that’s not a TV drama, you would go for less tension.

But I liked that they somewhat addressed the fact that Melinda May has repeatedly said she didn’t want to see too much action and was railroaded into it. Coulson was manipulating her into saying that she wants in, but at least she got to assent out loud. There were times when FitzSimmonds were really likeable (and they don’t seem to be the type Quinn was talking about, SHIELD just scooped them up for science), but although it’s settling a little, the show is still trying too hard.

I think the team managed to create its first potential supervillain. Oops, team. The other guy, Quinn, was a real Hey it’s that guy! for me.

And the line about SHIELD liking to move its scientists about will probably be relevant for Thor. (I hope Thor picks up on the Avenegers Assemble issues as much as this show does, specifically why Thor never visited Jane and, less interesting for me, Eric's reaction to his part in it, not to mention the fact that all of Earth now knows. I think it would be expecting too much to hope that Darcy comments on that hot guy with the bows and arrows.)

Orphan Black ep 5 - seen live, so who knows what the title was

I squealed very loudly about five times at some twist or revelation in this episode, and was almost glad when it came to an end because I needed to process/have a lie down. Er, I don’t even know where to begin.

Who is Sarah’s Monitor, then? (Please never Felix. And Victor seems far too flakey) Or Kassima’s for that matter?

I didn’t love that it was the realisations about Paul that made Beth kill herself. Let us not forget all the other stuff she was dealing with, or not dealing with, and hadn’t been dealing with as contributors to her mental ill health. Though I like Paul as part of it – and noted that he knows there’s an ‘us’ i.e. other monitors like him, even if his reaction to Sarah’s claim that they were twins suggested that he didn’t know about the clones – with changing loyalties.

So, that's two shadowy organisations, possibly related: one that created the clones as an experiment (?) and is monitoring them, but doesn't seem to have noticed that a lot of them are being killed; and one with at least one memeber who was in the former group, who are anti-clone and using a disturbed clone to kill the aberrations off.

I would love for the clones and Sarah to realise that Kira is a Big Deal, but in fairness there’s a lot going on. That was a pretty high-octane episode and there’s probably loads that I haven’t touched on. Most importantly, I really enjoyed it and was thoroughly engaged.
