Downton Abbey 4.5
Not a great episode and most of what happened felt like set-up. I couldn't get excited about Alfred going or staying. In fact, I was surprised we followed him to his test.
Oh, so they're making the rape of Anna all about Bates. Hmph. At least he treated her with kindness, but I don’t know why they want to have him go off on a vigilante rampage when they were too scared to explore his dark side before and we had the tediousness of his time in prison. However, I loved the moment where he cupped Anna’s face in his hands, I don’t think we’ve seen anything of the like between them (source: fanvid-aided memory) and how big his hands were and how little her face was worked so well in that moment.
Cora’s new lady’s maid seemed nice, and then we found out she was blackmailed by Thomas – with the irony being that for all his machinations, he knew nothing about the fact that Carson was considering bringing Molesley back, which might have affected Thomas hugely. Of course, both Carson and Molesley were idiots.
Lots of hearkening back – no, not to the days of George III but to season 1. The show remembered Evelyn! Like Mary, I was delighted, although it’s been several years since he was mentioned. I always remembered him as nice, I’m afraid that he may also be dull. It may also be a factor that until he returned I was still convincing myself that Mary/Tom was on the cards. But now Tom has remembered socialism (as written by Julian Fellowes) and may leave.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The reaction shots!!!!
Though given the way they’ve written the character, I wouldn’t blame the actor for wanting to go.
But I'm wondering if he does go to the States and then comes back with the Casting Spoiler that intrigued me more than Kiri Te-Kanawa (sp?)
What did irritate me was why have him say that in that scene – yeah, I know Branson is impulsive and outspoken, except when they forget that he is – when only Robert and Mary (she doesn’t want him to go! I should watch this ship sail away...) responded. I understood him as meaning he’d take adorable little Sybbie with him – so why nothing from Cora? The new maid parroting Thomas#s list of things to get in with Cora – America, Lady Sybil – seemed a little too lifted from the character notes about Cora – except when they forget them. Has she got bored of her granddaughter now that she has a grandson?
Looked as if I was right and there is/was another grandchild. Oh, Edith.
Otherwise, Isabel and Violet were fun, except we’ve seen it before, as we have with other fancy gadgets, so the fuss over the electric sewing machine and the forthcoming fridge was, like a lot of this episode, underwhelming.
What could possibly go wrong with Rose arranging Robert’s birthday party?
Fast-forwarded my way through the Strictly results. I don’t know if Rachel is unpopular – it definitely doesn’t help that she’s clearly the weakest of the younger women – or that people felt that Fiona or Deborah needed the votes more. As I said, it was the leaderboard that motivated me to vote for Deborah, but I wouldn’t have been distraught had Fiona been in the dance-off. But Rachel danced her quickstep better and so Julian went, thank goodness.
So, that’s the winner of The Voice. Nice voice, but hadly remarkable, absolutely no presence or charisma – and who put those things on the side of her dress? However, it did allow Pasha to go full twisty turny showy off, then followed by Artem. If only both my crazy Russian choreographers could dial it down for their poor celebrity partners, then one might be spared the dance-off and the other visiting the doctor.
The opening pro number was fun until I started overthinking Kristina in that giant cocktail glass.
