The Good Wife and The Lego Movie

The Good Wife - Ep 5.3

Again, excellent. I hated watching Diane and Will brought to that, so I was squirming along with Alicia when she was forced to witness it. It’s Mom and Pop fighting, it’s her possible future, it’s Diane bitterly regretting her mistake, it’s Will fighting for survival.

And it’s knowing he doesn’t know the half of it.

And then there was the moment where Kalinda found out Alicia was going. And yes, it’s a betrayal, but they definitely weren’t in a place for Alicia to tell Kalinda. Great check of a moment, because I’d always thought Kalinda knew, but it had all been about Cary (and the associates).

And it seems to be an open secret at the Governor’s Mansion.

The offer for Alicia to replace Diane !?!?!? I was all, oh come on, Will, although my analysis wasn’t as jaundiced as Cary – but I think he was pretty close to it – I thought Will was reaching out for her help more instinctively. I couldn’t see the cabal of mainly white men going for it, though, honeymoon (irony) or no.

Interesting to see David Lee in court (even if it was a bit of a stretch that he’d be on that particular case as it was about a contract, even if he could see a juicy malpractice suit coming.)

As for the case, oh, Janel Moloney – good to see her. I loved how Alicia’s motives were that desire to offer legal representation, feeling motherly/identifying? with Tara and that grain of competitiveness and wanting to win. We’ve seen that opposing counsel before, no? Was he the one Will punched? I could see the character assassination tactic coming and I liked that they complicated Tara and the couple’s motivations. I suppose we’ll never know if the baby beat the odds or not.

Meanwhile, with all that going on, Grace’s piteous wish to be ‘pretty’ and what that means (attractive, desired, and how girls don’t fully grasp what making themselves look pretty/an object of desire means and suggests and how messed up it all is) was way down in the emotional stakes. But I did enjoy Alicia waking up to the situation (that little moment where she noticed Cary clocking her daughter!) and turning into Fierce!Mama Bear. Plus, at least it takes the load off Zach.

And lastly, Marilyn just proved how naive she is in her ethical bubble. Whatever else he is, Peter is not naive. I’m glad it’s six of one and half a dozen of the other – but what else would I expect on this show? Well, a little more clarity about the Florrick family situation. We know little more than the fishing reporter about it, really. I’ve seen no evidence that he lives with them. I think Alicia has been letting herself be too busy to really face what recommitting to Peter means.

I mean, it was telling for me that, after witnessing Will and Diane’s ‘negotiation’ Alicia turned to no-one – well, who could she? – but made up her own mind and went to Cary to try to build a different partnership. (I am agog to find out if they pull it off.)

THEN last night I went to see The Lego Movie and it was delightful and all that I could hope for. I never played much with Lego as a child, but I would love to see articulate meta about the meta going on in the film. All I’ve got is that there were times when I could not believe that this was a Warner Brothers movie (they acknowledge what a terrible boyfriend Batman would be, Channing Tatum’s Superman is kind of stalked by Jonah Hill’s loser Green Lantern, there’s even a Wonder Woman cameo. And though the films basically acknowledges that most Hollywood blockbusters come from the imagination of 10 year old boys, I loved that we saw Wild Style build so many amazing things and that UniKitty was super effective when she stopped suppressing and let her rage and sadness out. Excellent vocal casting, so many jokes that I barely stopped smiling, clever, clever details, plus it’s a film for all age ranges. (Maybe not for tinies who can’t sit in chairs and are too young to stay quiet or probably play Lego, PARENTS IN MY ROW.)
