The Musketeer 2.2 An Ordinary Man

I thought this was a sensational episode – I actually applauded at the end of it.

We got right into it again, which is something I’m really enjoying. Here it was a simple set-up, although I think the ramifications will be many. The Royal Idiot Louis wants to spend his life as a commoner. Sadly, the Musketeers are not Jarvis Cocker to drily set him right. A quick costume change and he’s in the place the show probably uses as a bar all the time, a brawl ensues and BAM! He and D’Artagnan are abducted.

Then the show went and answered the main question in my head (thank you, show, that's always appreciated), which was where was Aramis in all this. Flirting with the Dauphin’s governess (if I heard right, although, SERIOUSLY, he’s a few weeks old, a nanny would be quite enough), because yes, he did come to see the baby, not you, love.

I will try not to be all blow-by-blow about this.

In the court, we saw that Rochefort’s hair is a bit more eighties pop video than it should be and ugh, Anne trusts him.

There’s a lovely, tender quality to how Hugo Speer’s Captain listens to her, although I spent every worried look he directed at Rochefort going ‘Well, you turned the job down.’

OF COURSE Constance stood up for D’Artagnan and was loyal to Anne. Please don’t forget that Rochefort is a snobby bully.

We’re getting answers about Rochefort’s relationship with Anne, which I was wondering about after the last episode, and I don’t like her dependence on him. I was all but screaming ‘Noooooooo’ at her signing that letter. But the episode made a fabulous job of showing how her newly strengthened position was dependent on Louis being there, alive. Suddenly she’s a mother of a French king, a Spaniard, seriously looking at becoming Regent, needing advice, and, under great strain, taking it from someone plausible.

Ideally, I’d love for her to get her smarts back and make sure the letter is burned. I would take Constance realising it (I’m already loving Anne-Constance) and taking steps/getting D’Artagnan or one of the Musketeers to do it.

The scene between Rochefort and the Ambassador was revelatory and interesting. I have almost already reached the point of banning Marc Warren from becoming the next Doctor should the vacancy arise. Because I have that power. Not.

As for the kidnapping at the crux of it all, I liked how the intricacies of the gang behind the slavery were shown, how nothing was as it seemed and they were all back-stabbers who had to trust each other to get anything done, plus of course with a Spanish link. It made for a nicely complex series of skirmishes towards the end.

Possibly the best thing about this episode, to my surprise, was the character development of Louis. I have always been impressed with Gage as an actor since discovering he was the Master’s lackey in the Hobbit, so he can handle any material they throw at him. The King's petulance and surprise at this hardship, but also the good stuff in him as he endured came out, but then all the dead father stuff, which explains so much about him, linked him to D’Artagnan and added poignancy because the Dauphin isn’t his (and they’re not being subtle about Aramis’s babydaddy angst). I felt for Louis, to my surprise. And then, at the end, beyond claiming that taking him out to a tavern was the Musketeers’ idea, he twisted the idea of clemency.

LOVED that that was a line D’Artagnan could not and would not cross – making him follow in Treville’s footsteps and turning down the King. I really enjoyed D’Artagnan in all this. The move with the horserider was cool, but the meatier stuff - and ugh, how he and Constance exchanged I want to make fierce babies glances at the christening.

And oh boy, Milady. MILADY, you made me dance because of your magnificence. Of course, she’d end up with a criminal gang of slavers. (Is there a vid with 'I'm a Survivor' out there about her?) But with her own motives, ALWAYS, and smarter than the average criminal, and the way she played the innocent to get in Louis’s good books, and the boot on D’Artagnan’s chest and the way she rolled her eyes at their failure to make the most of her help and escape properly. LOVED her. And Athos may have been the one to respond the least to her return, but I’m sure there will be more of that. The way things are working so far, they may even get Milady/Athos work for me in a way it didn't quite, last year.

It was also nice to see Athos, Porthos and Aramis working together on the investigation. I like the way they all bring their own strengths and the interplay between them. The fact that we know these characters and the actors and writers know them makes them the solid heart of the show.

I didn’t think there was a weak link in this episode, the characters and their feelings drove the story and fed into the action. They made the most of the idea of a missing and endangered Louis, held out hope to the viewer that he’d grow, although it looks as though he’s running scared, put Anne in peril and Milady back in play (please don’t let her be subservient to Rochefort, I want them to cross paths, but not like that) and showed how desperate our new player is.

The closing scene with Peppin’s family was gorgeously played, really touching, and all about the Musketeers’ code of honour. (Had Louis even given him another thought?)

Plus every shot of the palace was gorgeous and that location for the slavers' camp was brilliant.

I caved and have a new icon, tagged as 'Aramis ugh the ugliest' because I know how repulsive that mug is. ([personal profile] misbegotten posted just what I wanted at the right moment.)

I haven't found your reply button yet, it seems.

Me too! Like you, I hope she doesn't end up dragged in and subsequently down with Rochefort. I'm also looking forward to her and Athos, who didn't have much of reaction, yet, though he also didn't have time.

Poor Constance is going to be stuck at court with creepy guy and the lady who kidnapped her.
