TV thoughts

This is basically a PS about the last episode of Revenge that I watched. With the show being so explicit about David as a father figure for Nolan, it emphasised how he is by extension Emily’s brother figure, and thus their relationship with each other can be compared with Daniel and Charlotte’s. I’m not saying it’s healthy/healthier, but it’s more honest. And Nolan is there for his ‘younger sister’ much more, physically and emotionally. It’s not reciprocated, because Emily’s the main character and thus her pain is mostly more important, er, Emily’s more damaged and he recognises that. Daniel forgets about Charlotte's existence quite easily, even though her attention-seeking is pretty epic. I'm not touching financial vs. emotional support, although it was a big thing in the episode. Anyway, the comparison was brought into more focus - I don't often think about Nolan and Emily as quasi-siblings, per se.

I caught up with The Mentalist 7.4 Black Market

Obvious fake-out was obvious, although having it be Cho who Lisbon was fake buying a rock with was a nice twist. Having Jane’s discomfort be down to a cold and not jealousy was also good, if a harbinger of the fact that sick!Jane meant this ep was more about supporting characters.

Poor Vega, she has yet to learn that deadpan!Cho isn’t necessarily angry!Cho – although he’s angry, right enough, because she hasn’t mastered who you lie to when you’re on The Team (Texas flavour). But Abbott thinks she’s redeemable (the man who brought Jane back) and her similarity to the hasty dead guy who wanted to make money, not learn how to sell gems, was there, so there’s commitment to developing her decently. Well done, season 7. In fairness, Cho’s point about needing to trust her and her needing to earn that over time was not unreasonable.

We finally, IIRC, met Mrs Abbott, who was lovely, as was Abbott’s pleasure in her success (although it makes me wish they’d avoid the Cho-Vega-Wylie triangle if we have another established relationship on screen, but with Wylie trying to cheer her up and the shared moment of exhilaration between Cho and Vega as they collared their men, that seems forlorn.) And Abbott got an unexpected plot – I thought Jane would be the hurdle to the confirmation. But it’s his past. Him having to sacrifice their marriage for her job in this way is a new spin on things, even though I'm torn about it ending up being his decision, which you can argue is because he's the established character, but gender dynamics are not being played with too much herein.

Jane’s mobile home! I was hoping we’d see it again in this lap of honour.

Aww, look at Teresa melting at him saying he wanted to see her. Also, look at her wearing a reddish top these days.

I was chuckling at Jane getting his sofa moved and wrapped up in the blanket. Watching Lisbon essentially play him was also amusing, especially as she got into it, and Jane was amused/proud of her.

At least Mrs Abbott knew her husband was covering about Rio Bravo – well, 17 years of marriage should do that - but how awful that that’s the choice.

Less awful, but definitely something being dangled in front of us and Lisbon for the end of the show’s run was Jane’s suggestion, in his mobile home, that they go away to horizons new together. Of course she got skittish, because she’s a cop, through and through. Isn’t she? Something to think about for her and us. At least it was seeded now.

And a Cho/Vega trust fall was averted. Not that I was actually watching The Mentalist when the season 1 trust fall happened, but I still feel protective of it.
