Revenge and Nashville thoughts

Revenge 4.20 Burn

Heh, well, at least they faced up to the fact that Margiaux has good reason not to want to be in the same room as Louise again, but Louise did have her own reasons for the crazy. Sassily presented.

So weird to think of Amanda as Emily. (And, as you’ll see, vice-versa.)

Victoria’s attacker looked like a woman – more likely the New Red Sharpie Wielder than our Emily. But one can understand why people would assume it was her.

Our Emily keeps getting distracted from her one last job by having to open up and talk about the state of her relationships with Nolan...and Ben...boys and their feelings when a girl’s coping mechanism is to be closed off.

David’s revelation was the one real emotional blow in this episode, which I mostly watched with a jaundiced eye and some snark, because the father-daughter reunion and rebuilding has been the most touching thing about this (ridiculous) season. Of course they’re convoluting how Emily’s going to find out. But it touched me to the quick that he was facing this without her.

Although Louise is on the wrong side, that’s chiefly Nolan’s own fault, and there’s no reason why she should be nice to him and Tony.

Rather than dissecting what was going on with Victoria, I’ll just note that fierce Stevie is fierce.

Nolan is the number one Emily/Jack shipper, isn’t he? I am pro them, but I haven’t loved how the show's handled the relationship for most of this season.

Trying to be objective, I think Emily/Ben suffered because it hasn’t been one thing or another – they probably thought it would be great to have him and Jack be cops for plot reasons, but by trying to make him more important than the rebound after Aiden and then realising that if Emily/Jack is endgame and the endgame is fast approaching, we’ve had her constantly shutting Ben out of the big stuff and him repeatedly whining about it. So the Emily/Ben material doesn't quite merit the airtime it's getting.

Meanwhile, Jack leaving so quickly, basically because of one question from Stevie, was daft – and all just to set up an ultimatum for Emily. I hope he phoned Carl’s babysitter and let her know her paycheck was drying up and to let her say goodbye to Carl, given the amount of time they’ve spent together!

Given the way the show tears through plots, Tony still has time to turn out to be something other than what he seems to be.

Aha, we had a girl do The Dash, and given this show’s form, I would have let out a sigh of relief that Jack’s plane didn’t go up in flames, except even before Mason turned up – spot-on timing, because Emily did owe him the exclusive – to give his expository speech, I knew from the anvilicious title what Victoria in her present state was drooling over her throne for.

She’s a much better dressed arsonist than Emily ever was. And it tied nicely into Charlotte’s firestarting too. But as blowing up the Stowaway didn't really free Jack, it's hard to care about Grayson Manor - maybe the budget could have been better spent elsewhere.

Nashville 3.4 I Feel Sorry for Me

I preferred the drama to the wackiness in this episode, mainly because of which characters had to deal with the drama (Deacon and Luke’s backing singer pretending they were in an actual musical made me wish that they could come up with a batter book).

As I said before, Glenn and Emily ARE Juliette’s family, kinda, (so when he said as much when he called on Avery – EEP, that he called on Avery - made me happy). They’re more than staff – after Rayna, they’re the next people she told, and Glenn was on point in raising Avery. And the wanting her to be happy/her hating to disappoint her was really moving. We finally saw Glenn without his wig on!

It all built up to Avery and Juliette’s big scene, which was BIG. They are turning out to be what the show wants Rayna/Deacon to be for me. Of course, her number was burned into his mind. But that was a terrible lead-in to her telling him about her pregnancy.

The other juicy storyline was what turned out to be the Zoe-Scarlett one.

Scarlett’s face as Gunnar made Zoe finding them awkward was a peach. It does not help that Gunnar is just really bad at being in a relationship. He’s also in my doghouse for comparing Juliette to his brother, although his motive was good (as was the motive for the surprise leaving party, but given that Zoe’d clearly wanted him to be upfront in the previous episode, not making a surprise of it would have led to less grief.)

Scarlett’s puncturing of Zoe’s paranoia and jealousy with the question of why Zoe didn’t put their friendship first/want her to stick around was excellent. And it was backed up with Zoe not knowing that Scarlett couldn’t face singing in front of an audience (still). I’m not saying that Scarlett/Gunnar isn’t simmering at some level and that there is no reason for Zoe to feel insecure and competitive (but that comes with the territory of going out with your friend’s ex), but Zoe needs to step up or I think Scarlett (and the rest) should grow even further apart from her.

Of course, this came out as Rayna made her big women-positive sell to Sadie. I’m not sure what I think about Sadie, although I thought that their voices sounded great together on the duet.

Discovering Jeff used to be in a band was the lowest point. Show, I never want to see him sing.
