Downton and Person of Interest
Downton Abbey 4.6
Mixed bag. I LOVED the clash of Isobel vs. Violet enormously, even though there was nothing much that was new about it.
Mrs Hughes is still the boss. Her telling Ivy she deserved Daisy’s tongue-lashing was hilarious.
The second Tom Branson had to talk about pig-farming, I started to accept his leaving. I mean, pig-farming. Then Evelyn’s friend/colleague Charles Blake came along and was dismissive about toffs and Mary got plain rude and I remembered, obliquely, that one of these days I’m going to reread all the Lord Peter Wimsey books in order, and then I thought that Downton ‘the place where anything can happen’ Abbey really needs a genial ghost in the library that only some characters can see, except I might be cross with who Sir Julian of the Fellowes decides could see him.
But then we had the ‘Aren’t we lucky?’ scene, which melted me. Not so much that I failed to snark at Tom going mad over Sybil for years/season 2, but Penelope Wilton sold it, and there was fellow feeling and the moppets. They should try bringing the moppets down to the living room to thaw one of the group scenes. I was on the verge of thinking that Tom could and should go to America, which is apparently the only place they make girls who aren’t Earl’s daughters and Irish working girls. Except, I think the show is teasing me with the possibility of Mary/Tom.
So, goodbye then, Alfred aka the stretched-out ginger William. Although your speech about Carson was nice and your goodbye to Daisy was nice, if unexpected, for I thought you were oblivious to her feelings, you could have left last season as far as I was concerned.
Jimmy’s ideas about who he should be polite to...his surprise at Ivy pushing him away is only matched by Thomas’s surprise that people don’t like being blackmailed. I hope the new lady’s maid (still haven’t taken in her name) uses the common sense she’s been gifted with – telling Mrs Hughes seems to solve most problems at Downton.
I really like Laura Carmichael’s rare emotional scenes with Hugh Bonneville. I know Edith was lashing out, but I do think the parental dynamics with their daughters have changed since losing Sybil. I also think her mother would be the best person to tell. As we were reminded at the hotel, Cora can be fierce. Does Edith know that? No.
I was surprised by how well the Crawleys rose to Rose’s ‘surprise’, really.
Re: the trailer for the next ep. VIOLET. I will care so much more about this storyline, especially with Isobel nursing her, than Bates’s murderous feelings towards Gillingham’s man. (Every time they mention the engagement with Miss Lane-Fox, instead of feeling anything for Mary, I worry about the poor woman’s maidservants and wish Anna had listened to Mrs Hughes.)
Person of Interest 2..1 The Contingency
I’m so glad the show is back! Reese’s adventures were fun – I got to shout out ‘defenestration’, which is always a thing that pleases me. It was sweet to have Carter be the one to bring down the Aryan Brotherhood giant, and I still feel for Lionel every time Reese is mean to him. Driving it all was Reese’s loyalty to Finch.
And the Finch flashbacks as he, well, trained, his Machine - was the echo with the dog deliberate? But then the Machine is an AI, not a pet. And Reese is not entirely predictable.
Acker was fun as Root – I didn’t foresee that the blonde woman’s mystery guy would be part of the government conspiracy involved with the Machine.
And so, ROAD TRIP ahoy.
I've got loads of TV I want to catch up on.
