The Musketeers - Episode 4
Best thing?
The hall where Athos and the Duke had the indoor duel. Although there was a lot of other gorgeousness (as well as that place that they always use for prisons/criminal hideaways.)
The Duchess would be a much better ruler than her brother (and her husband), I’m just saying. I didn’t see her being an agent coming, but the scene where she fired up the Musketeers into hiding the Spanish spy was boss, even if it led to the extreme wrongness of Richilieu winking in conspiracy with D’Artagnan (and I felt the order of the scenes didn’t work.)
Mainly, though, I wasn’t that bothered. Aramis’s idea of an acceptable level of proof is ridiculous. I think I may have overused the adjective ‘stupid’ for most of their treatment of Marsac.
I was expecting Constance to ask D’Artagnan for swordfighting lessons, so until I realised that guns would be more practical (although given what she’d gone through, wouldn’t hand-to-hand self-defence skills be the best?) I was a bit miffed, although his reaction and the ensuing lesson was as clichéd as all get out.
No Milady, no Queen/Aramis, a couple of moments where the production’s desire to have background artists was stupid because the main characters were talking quite loudly about super secret stuff around them. The fact that I noticed this says it all about the main plot – I thought they were both far too obvious about ‘That Thing in Savoy Five Years Ago’ and confusing.
Which is not to say that I was bored, but I wasn't that impressed either.
I caught up on Brooklyn Nine-Nine 1.4 (although I should try to remember that it's repeated on Monday at eight) I’d like to see Jake as Rosa’s second (obviously, they couldn’t spin a whole episode from it, it’d just be a secne, but still). I laughed throughout = at the bad second-is it weird or sexy (weird) strand and the never knowing how to read the captain strand.
Revenge 3.6
In the middle of all the melodramatic responses to the twists and revelations, we had Jack and Nolan time!!!! We had the truth between them!!! We had Jack advising Nolan to stand up to Emily and I LOVED that he said that Nolan told her he wanted friendship, which meant a two-way relationship, not looking after Emily or honouring his promise, which was what Nolan had said to Jack, which is true, but not enough. It can't be all give, give, give, however much she demands it because of her obssession. It was Nolan asserting what he needs. And he got some measure of trust from her; they both did. And Jack-Emily-Nolan is the heart of the show for me, which this emphasised after it was denied to me for so long.
This doesn’t mean that I don’t think it’s preposterous that Jack gave up the Stowaway re-opening entirely, or that they sped up Nolan/Patrick because they’d only got a certain amount of time with the actor. (The line about Patrick not getting hurt was hilarious, because he is Victoria’s son, and I’m sure that getting sent away hurt.)
But I thought they got to see a more real Emily than Aiden does. I will swallow that she’s given up the plan to confess after bringing the Greysons down for one where Victoria kills ‘her’ but I think Aiden is living in cuckooland if he dreams she’s going to go to the Maldives with him (anyway, the show hasn’t been cancelled, has it? This is what I think every time they mention The Wedding.) I think she's using his feelings for her to keep him on side and, to some extent, acting out her issues with the other guys in her life (Daniel mainly in this episode, but Jack before).
While watching Charlotte try to take a level in Victoria is excruciating, I liked the show introducing Sarah to us and bringing her back into Daniel’s life, as she may halt him turning into Conrad. (Sadly, this week, I wasn’t feeling any pity for Conrad’s still extant and futile love for his wife.)
I am a bit miffed that the show has reeled me back in with Jack-Emily-Nolan time, because I was feeling really disengaged – I’m not convinced that we’re anywhere close to the resolution and by the time we get there, the only good outcome I can see is Carl NOT going on a revenge journey of his own against whoever is left free, alive and unrepentant, but I wasn’t liking much of the journey either so far.
Must remember that Parks and Recreation is starting back on Wednesday. There's no way I'm watching it live. The slot that BBC Four have put it on is basically a taunt, but there's iPlayer.
