Bumper Downton post

I could only catch up on this on the Sunday morning, so I had a double Downton day.

Last look back at the weekend

Over the weekend, I saw Suffragette. I’d like to write a thoughtful, articulate post about it, it'll have to suffice for now to say that I think it’s an essential film to watch, which dramatises an important story well.

Also, apparently Dave is not going straight into the next series of Parks and Rec.

Downton 6.02

Isn’t it amusing that Amazon Prime is sponsoring Downton Abbey, when the product’s USP is speediness and the show couldn’t outrun snails at times? Or was it the Crawleys’ distaste for paying death duties that brought them together???

I watched the show on Tuesday night, but it's only now that I've been able to post that. In the meantime, I've watched Mr Deeds Goes To Town, which is delightful, and what occurred to me is that we get a Clark Kent/Lois Lane dynamic with a twist. As for the news that Downton's sixth series will be its last (are ITV Community fans with the movie talk?), I can only muster up a shrug. I think it would be hard to carry on without Maggie Smith - I'm calling the final episode involving Violet's death and the birth of a child. Fellowes has been running out of steam on several storylines for a bit (as for people who try to have the jumping the shark discussion, I'd say this show has always had its ridiculous moments, it's just that the first series hid them better.) There are certain things I hope are wrapped up. And could Edith please, please, please be happy? Yes, it has become an autumn/winter fixture, and we'll miss it, but nobody will need to pass me a hanky.

You do know I like costume dramas

First, Fandom March Madness is up and running. So many female characters! I'm surprised, but pleasantly so, that Amy Santiago made it through to represent B99 - I thought Rosa was fandom's favourite, and Violet Crawley is representing Downton. I voted Elsie Hughes, myself, but would obviously support any Not!Mary - seems like she's gone too far this last season for even her fans, I suppose. Anyway, it's true that the Dowager Countess gets the best lines on Downton.

Secondly, I did watch Poldark last night. It basically poses a question to the viewer: which is easiest on the eye, Aiden Turner or Cornwall? Here have a close-up. Now have a sweeping vista. And repeat.

2014 fanfiction writing round-up

I posted nine fics this year, five were ficlets, but four passed the thousand-word mark, which is a lot for me. The only fandom I wrote more than once in was Downton Abbey, (ha!) most were obscure fandoms, or old or featured less popular pairings – this was brought home to me by writing a vignette in the MCU (it had three times the number of hits on AO3 of any other fic I wrote this year.) Six of these fics were based on prompts, mainly from lj's comment_fic. Six were het pairings, and I’d say I ship four of those pariting strongly, while the other two are canonical, and the other three fics were gen.
