shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Poldark Ross/Demelza ep 4 smiling)
[personal profile] shallowness
Over the weekend, I saw Suffragette. I’d like to write a thoughtful, articulate post about it, it'll have to suffice for now to say that I think it’s an essential film to watch, which dramatises an important story well.

Also, apparently Dave is not going straight into the next series of Parks and Rec.

Downton Abbey 6.05

SEPTIMUS Spratt. My heart!!!! What a glorious Christian name.

So, we were warned about the shocking scenes – cue me wondering if Henry Talbot was going to run down the pigs in a race with Tom Branson because Mr Mason had been careless or something, but oh no. They really meant ’shocking scenes’ and put down your nice cup of tea or whatever. They saved the worst dinner at Downton ever for the last series. For all that they’ve telegraphed Robert’s ill health, who expected er, projectile bleeding?

Anyway, the declaration of love to Cora was very touching, as was Violet asking Edith to call at any hour and Isobel taking care of her. They also got everything they could out of downstairs’ dependency on upstairs – Bates and well, everyone, was facing an uncertain future, never mind Carson’s angst, which tied into the system he’d devoted his life to.

Did Mary know about the ulcer previously, BTW, or had she forgot? That’s just for info, but in a more anti-Mary vein, she’s finally got a clue about Marigold, and I fully expect her to blab about it in front of Bertie. I hope he won’t care, but they were playing the him not knowing Edith and admiring her terribly angle. I enjoyed her sounding out his prospects and him seeming clueless – but at least they kissed and it was lovely, even if they went all posh and English afterwards. UGH, let Edith be happy, show. Let her marry before Mary, even.

For I have my usual problems with Queen Mary, even though Tom laughing at her smoothes off some of her edges. She seemed to have forgotten everything she learned from loving Matthew (even if I felt a flicker of sympathy that the new chap in her life loves cars, which killed her first husband.) I suppose being busybusybusy running Downton will be the latest obstacle to her love life. Actually, I wish Henry could see her being horrible to Edith and backing away because of that.

Tom got to play diplomat within the family and towards Neville C. Chamberlain turning up just felt like snippets from a biography Fellowes always planned to write, and they were about as subtle as heavy metal about his tendency towards appeasement. Frankly, I was surprised nobody mentioned Michael Gregson’s treatment at the hands of the Nazis.

Downstairs, Andy the footman has become interesting and they’ve given the actor more to do in this one episode than he’s had since he’s been on the show. I did feel that we’d seen this plotline before (but I was thinking of Home Fires; however, we have had Educating Daisy and Mrs Patmore hiding her eyesight problems, which were similar.) At least we moved on from Thomas being persistently rejected.

Meanwhile, Carson and Daisy can shut up. If he wants his food a certain way, he can learn how to cook it himself (I fervently hope his new wife is pushed to the point where she says as much). As for Daisy, she’s old enough to act better, but apparently whatever she took out of the Yew Tree debacle made no impression on her brain. You’d think she’d want her two parental figures to find happiness and companionship in each other, but oh no, dog in the manger time (even though I suspect Andy of harbouring feelings towards her, and seriously, that’ll pair off most of the characters, although I do love the fact that the show takes older people’s romances so seriously).

I too feel cheated by how Baxter’s plotline played out. Surely we deserved to see her horrible ex and for her to have her day in court. Ah well, I’d just take Molesley getting a move on. Sorry, I used ‘getting a move on’ in the context of this show. Silly me.

Grandparent time was sweet despite the terrible child acting. We have a year of birth for Edith. There were, as ever, good hats and outfits, and Dencker and Spratt’s little war was fun – I actually like the characterisation of Dencker and her stupidity a lot.
