I posted a ficlet. How Pandora Felt (After Opening the Box) Scorpion, Paige/Walter, post 2.01 ‘Satellite of Love’. About that. )

I also watched X3, after debating with my completeist self whether I wanted to, really. It’s so bad, but I hope to get Dark Phoenix on DVD soon, which is not so bad, and I wanted to compare.

X3 is such a drop off from X2 (which I watched the pervious weekend and X-Men the weekend before), although it is not as bad as Batman and Robin. It doesn’t misjudge its tone so much, although some of the lines are equally bad.

Some of my problems with X3. References to other X-Men movies. )

I feel justified for splitting the last batch, because I can slip in Snowy Weather by [dreamwidth.org profile] small_hobbit (Sanditon (TV) Esther/Babington). Written for me! Esther and Babington talk themselves out of going to a party. It weaves the song the prompt references in well.

And here are my final recs for the year. Again, nothing from this year's Yuletide, but fics and fanvids in the following fandoms: Timeless; The Wood Wife; Wonder Woman; X-men movievers;; Zootopia; and Original fic.

I posted two X-Men: Dark Phoenix ficlets over the weekend. One was ‘broken promise’ a Scott POV prompt fill responding to the events of the movie, and the other was ‘The Most Dangerous Player on the Tour’, a tennis AU take on the events of the movie. Jean being the player in question. This is what happens when I go to see X-Men Dark Phoenix on the closing weekend of the French Open. I’ve started many tennis AUs in my time, but never posted any before. I suspect no actual newspaper would publish anything like that, but it was fun translating characters and their mutations into the world of tennis.

I saw that people were doing a first lines meme just as I was about to post the above – dilemma! What do you do? I swept through my first lines of the last 10 fics on AO3. Some I liked more than others. I was chuffed that they were all from 2019.

Fine. I’ll do the last lines meme.

As posted on AO3 )

I wrote a 3 sentence Scott Summers/Jean Grey ficlet for the prompt 'Author's Choice, any character(s), broken promise' at [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic. 59 words. Dark Phoenix spoilers.
broken promise

The Most Dangerous Player on The Tour, X-Men - Dark Phoenix, ensemble, 756 words, universal. Tennis AU.
Spoilers for the movie and previous in the alternate timeline movies.
Summary: Speculation about what next for the most dangerous player on the tour.

Den of Geek argues for how Dark Pheonix ‘fixes’ the X-Men movie continuity here. It’s plausible up to a point – I haven’t seen the Deadpool films – and I think that point is X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

So, I’ve seen X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

I had mixed feelings upon going in. My excitement at a do-over of the Dark Phoenix saga on the big screen has diminished since they cued it up in Apocalypse, although I expected this film to be better than X-Men: The Last Stand, which I do not think is an unreasonable ask. I was also unenthused that Mystique and Magneto would be in it, worried that the plot would have to accommodate them and Lawrence and Fassbender’s wattage, but pleased about Chastain playing the baddie. And then, as more news came out about Singer, it seemed like a good thing that Simon Kinsberg was writing and directing, except he’d never directed before and…

Non spoilery reaction: 'eh'.

I posted five ficlets yesterday: Doc Brown’s [Sky High, Medulla]/Career Pathway [Harry Potter, Luna, Flitwick]/The Pop-up Shop [Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, Mahoney]/”Hello?” [MCU, Darcy]/Still Learning [X-Men Alternate Timeline Movies, Hank] - here.

They were written during January, and are in movie fandoms (well, the Harry Potter one is more book canon). Four are definitely gen and one a bit cracky. Three were fills for ‘any, any’ prompts, which is all on my brain. One fandom was new, in that I wrote X-Men alternate movie timeline fic – I have strong feelings that there are many subtexts to the X-Men, and I suppose the newer movies are better at bringing out race and disability issues. I wrote that one at the start of the month and can’t remember where the OCs’ names came from. That and the Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium one have been posted at ff.net and AO3.

The ficathon closes at the end of the month, but I don't think I'll be looking up any more prompts. So, for completeness's sake:

Doc Brown’s, Sky High, Medulla, ‘any fandom, any, a fetish for mad scientists’ (92 words) Read more... )

Career Pathway, Harry Potter, Luna, Flitwick, ‘Harry Potter, Luna Lovegood, Quidditch commentary’ (60 words) Read more... )

The Pop-up Shop, Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, Mahoney, ‘Any fandom, any, a little shop that wasn’t there yesterday and won’t be there tomorrow’ (150 words) Three-sentence version. Author's prefered six-sentence version behind the cut. Read more... )

“Hello?”, MCU, Darcy Lewis. 'Any, Any, "Hello?". (73 words. Spoilers for Avengers: Infinity Wars) Read more... )

I scoffed too when they said Logan was the Wolverine movie ‘the fans’ have been waiting for – hasn’t Jackman dutifully said that before all the previous movies, which I’ve seen? Wolverine: Origins was a mistake and The Wolverine was dull, and I didn’t rewatch either before going to see this film. Yes, I saw the trailer, but I couldn’t believe that the film would live up to it, didn’t want to believe the star ratings for the reviews, although I knew I’d go to see it. But…it’s good. It’s easily the best Wolverine standalone film, it captures and references a lot of what made the character the breakout star of the movie franchise from when he was introduced, and makes the most of its 15 certificate, though I have no idea what timeline it fits in, mind!

I saw this a couple of nights ago. There was a problem that meant no adverts or trailers, no nothing, but we got the film all right. I thought there were meant to be two credit tags, but I only spotted the one after all the credits had passed.

Digital Spy was reporting at the end of last week that Nashville was cancelled - I wasn't going to be able to watch season 4 and I don't even know if it's started airing here. Also Castle spoiler ) And the Huntingbird spin-off is not going to fly. Just like last year.

In other news, I watched the Rogue Cut of DoFP and I don't think the extensions add much, though I suspect I'm now going to be concentrating on reading X-Men fic before X-Men Apocalypse comes out.

Dave have, for once, not taken a break after airing a season of Parks and Rec, so we've gone straight into season 6, yay!
