shallowness

I posted nine fics this year, five were ficlets, but four passed the thousand-word mark, which is a lot for me. The only fandom I wrote more than once in was Downton Abbey, (ha!) most were obscure fandoms, or old or featured less popular pairings – this was brought home to me by writing a vignette in the MCU (it had three times the number of hits on AO3 of any other fic I wrote this year.) Six of these fics were based on prompts, mainly from lj's comment_fic. Six were het pairings, and I’d say I ship four of those pariting strongly, while the other two are canonical, and the other three fics were gen.

AND THEN YouTube cannily promoted ‘Classic Alice’ on the side of one of those videos, and I was intrigued.

Episode 1 is entitled Down the Rabbit Hole. While not based on a specific novel, it’s a transmedia-ish metatextual high-concept fictional vlog. Or something. It had the equivalent of footnotes. I’m doomed.

I tried to catch up on last week’s Revenge (3.11, Homecoming) on 4 on Demand, but it wasn’t available for whatever reason, so I had to turn to Television without Pity. Huh, turns out the recap writer is anti-Jack and pro-Aidan, which is the opposite of where I am. Also, ( spoiler )

And that’s where the posts end on this page, but there seem to be more episodes on YouTube (which I’m happy to focus on, because I rarely found that the tweets or pictures added much). I suspect less ( spoiler/speculation based on the book )

Jane Eyre is number 12 in the Observer’s top 100 novels, and Robert McCrum explains why here. As I’d been watching a lot of The Autobiography of Jane Eyre over the weekend, this jumped out at me:

Charlotte Bronte takes her audience by the throat with a fierce narrative of great immediacy. Jane Eyre's voice on the page is almost hypnotic. The reader can hardly resist turning the next page, and the next…

In an extraordinary breakthrough for the English novel, borrowing the intimacy of the 18th-century epistolary tradition, Charlotte Brontë had found a way to mesmerise the reader through an intensely private communion with her audience. We, the author, and Jane Eyre become one. For this, she can be claimed as the forerunner of the novel of interior consciousness.

The adaptation was having a similar pull on me, as did LBD at times - my tendency is to watch these vids in blocks that are as long as television shows. It’s partly the format – ‘diarist’ speaking to viewer, but it’s also wondering how they'll adapt a beloved story factor.

Anyway, thoughts about episodes 21 to 30.
