Here's some reaction and predictions
Slow opening, no? But Mrs Hughes and Carson’s wedding grew increasingly touching, and I thought we got lots of new shots of the house.
I’ll start upstairs because I want to vent: Mary is not so much a bully as a selfish cow. I will concede that the list of people she’d save from a fire would go: George, Sybbie and Marigold, because they’re children (but she’d resent having to save Marigold and blame Edith for it.) Anna and Carson (also their significant others.) Violet and her parents, Isobel and Tom.
Speaking of, BRANSON!!! (I was snarking about Oscar-nominated or winning actors when the announcer dropped the teaser.)
I am both pleased and annoyed that he’s returned. I suppose they got the actor back because it IS the last series, and I strongly suspect them of finally going for Mary/Tom. If this were series 4, I would be all over it, but since then, Mary has reverted if not worsened (however nice she was to Anna and however much she apologised to Mrs Hughes) AND TOM BRANSON DESERVES SOMEONE WHO WOULD WRITE TO HIM IMMEDIATELY, not after the wedding. But I’m sure they’re going to go there – Matthew Goode wouldn’t sign up for more episodes? They realised that his characters, like Charles Blake had responsibilities to his estate that might challenge Mary’s to Downton? And Mary needs to stay at Downton for George and the show is not going to let her be loveless while everyone else pairs off – I’d have loved for Tom to find a nice girl in Boston.
I’m just going to cling to Tom and Sybbie being cute around Downton – the three wee cousins were very cute.
Another prediction – Robert is going to get very sick in some way that involves the drear hospital plot. If he were to die and Violet to live, it’d be too tragic, I think, but he’s definitely going to be ill.
I wish Cora would put her foot down more often. I wish she had put her foot down more with Violet instead of letting the meeting degenerate as it did. Anyway, she was right about Elsie’s wishes and right to squash Mary. She should have squashed her harder – all Mary’s life. (And Mary could have tried harder to tell her mother what she’d planned with her clothes, because it put the staff in an invidious position and was especially horrible for Elsie on the eve of her wedding. Lazy, entitled so-and-so.)
It’s going to be annoying that Edith will choose London eventually (although I have come round to thinking that even if she and Marigold were living there, the possibility of crossing paths with Mrs Drewe and some more abducting going on would still be real, but that is Edith’s fault). That man was obviously very sweet on her and as he seems in her age range and supportive, I’m fine with that, even if Edith is oblivious to his feelings. He’s obviously besotted in finding her ‘inspiring’, but then he hasn’t had to suffer series after series of Edith dithering.
Violet was fine at home, annoying over the hospital, but had better dialogue than in the last two episodes. Isobel was harsh to Dr Clarkson and Lord Merton was ineffective.
Downstairs, I am glad Elsie got her wedding day the way she liked it - nice spread and the ladies in her life to give her a better outfit, even if it was brown. Mrs Patmore was stalwart as ever.
A lit-up Anna flirting with Bates was a refreshing change. He hasn’t had much to do recently. Presumably he’s going to get suspicious because she won’t tell him about the pregnancy?
Is every episode going to involve Thomas going for a job interview in an unsuitable position, while still being too paranoid and bitter to fully appreciate what he’s got? Tedious.
The worst was Daisy jumping the gun. Sorry, I can’t believe in Daisy the scholar when she’s being so stupid.
Molesley got into my bad books for being so glum. Does he not have the estimable Baxter in his life?
Also, props to her amazing sewing skills.
And finally Spratt vs. Denker was still very entertaining (in Downton terms).
