I caught up on The Mentalist before the next live episode. Maybe I subconsciously put it off because I didn’t want to know what happened next...
6.16 White as the driven snow
But yay! Being Grace wasn’t fridged – for no good in-character reason. In fact, it’s best not to think about Heibach’s character arc, methinks. Anyway, we got to see Grace being resourceful. When Wayne said ‘That’s my girl’ he spoke for all fans, I think.
Heh to Rigsby raising that he and Van Pelt had speculated about Jane/Lisbon. Jane was sooooo non-committal at that point. I can’t believe Cho never considered it. I suppose he thinks that she’s too awesome for Jane – true – and he’s made her suffer too much – also true. But Cho is normally pretty sharp. Anyway, the reference to the pony went all the way back to the frist season – longstanding bond duly noted.
I didn’t know about all the information that was intentionally given to Rigsby. It was a red rag to a bull, as it were. Presumably Lisbon and Cho thought Jane would keep a lid on him – and he did remind Wayne of his responsibility to his kids. Benjamin was so cute, and reminded us that if they two of them accepted Abbot’s offer, what about him, living in California with a busy mother?
But Jane also told Heibach that he cared about his team and then that he had nothing left to live for. Perhaps Heibach was just oo flustered to remember that.
Sadly, Grace’s instincts didn’t allow her to steal the ‘nice’ lady rescuer’s car.
Cho was a little bit too honest in letting Abbot know that the Team comes before their duties (I would like to think it was partly consideration of that that stopped Jane from letting them in on the plan – I think it’s ambiguous. Though Lisbon and Cho cared, they didn’t know what Rigsby was going through in the way that Wayne did, which is a factor).
While they were still in the car I thought it might come down to the others investigating the sister, but by the time we’d got through the shot, the oil and were on the flare, I thought it was one of Jane’s Cunning Plans, which went well enough until they got to the sister’s house. An agent would have been around the back, but Jane was a bit useless there, which was one of the holes in his plan.
BUT THEN. They shot Rigsby TWICE. And my elation about Grace vanished like a pricked balloon.
Until it turned out Haibach was a terrible shot, but for a couple of minutes I was in slightly traumatised awe that they might go there.
Now, I don’t know what to think – are Grace and Wayne, who were both impressive - going to join the FBI or retire and be returning guest stars?
The hugging and the Team spirit of it all was adorable.
And, as a shipper, I’ll just take Lisbon telling Jane off for his crazy plan, bickering like they were the married couple.
6.17 Violets
Well, after the last episode, we and Jane clearly needed some fun times (give or take a grieving widow, because a man thought a picture was more important than people.)
First, nice to see Lisbon flirting with the art squad guy, even if he’s not quite the brightest bulb on offer, he had a very nice voice (but they really shouldn’t have cast someone with similarish features to last week’s villain!) and the straightforwardness would be attractive for her.
The opposite of straightforward was Jane’s con, with a part for everyone. I liked that Wylie was being used as Jane’s voice and acting the part of audience along with the art guy too. Tunney, Baker and the other actors had fun playing different parts, but more the first two because they’ve played the same characters for years.
And oh, plenty of Lisbon/Jane fodder, even if it means taking the word of people with more distance than their co-workers. On what Wylie said, the thing is, they do have a relationship and even if it’s not quite romantic (yet?) it’s significant. I found it amusing that Jane was almost being fey as an art thief and handling Lisbon so carefully – helping her out of cars and stuff! But then she was in ridiculous heels and clothes in a place without food at his behest.
We had another look at Lisbon’s nightwear – a nice nod to the season2 shirt, as she pulled a blanket over Jane, sleeping soundly (?), on a sofa! And then flirting some more with the new guy, which led to the pancake date. Leaving Jane alone on another sofa, perhaps not thinking so much of his dead wife. (Speaking as a shipper, I can wait!)
Meanwhile, with the actors’ names no longer in the titles and Cho bringing back the tradition of pizza after solving a case, and hinting that he’s moved on, Grace and Wayne look like they won’t be joining the team – which is probably better for the characters, but I’m a little sad and will squee so loudly when they return as guests. It would make sense for them to do so if we return to the Blake Association, as we’re bound to. But while Van Pelt and Rigsby have had their moments over the years, for me, it's not like if the show shed Lisbon and Cho. Although it's two women to three men, four if you count Wylie and more if the art squad guy works some cases with them, which isn't a ratio that I love.
