Four things
Apr. 2nd, 2018 09:05 amI spent the end of March posting a lot of recs at
het_reccers before it came to an end. I may repost them at a more lesiurely pace at
het_reccers, which asks for slightly different information). What I’ve learned: to stop being precious about the content of my recs, which may have been why my reccing at the comms dropped off - when I'm reccing here, I'm much more chilled because it's my space; it’s easier to post a few recs in a go than masses because of fiddly HTML; I liked a lot of het fic from Yuletide 2015.
Also, if anyone who, like me, liked Taraji P. Henson as Joss Carter in Person of Interest, saw the trailer for ‘Proud Mary’ and thought ‘Ooh’, profit from my experience: it’s dull. You're really better off watching a couple of PoI eps. Kudos to whoever made the trailer, but it makes the film look way better than it is.
Thirdly, I posted a ficlet yesterday: Not Quite a Gulp (Sherlock, U. Molly Hooper (Molly/Sherlock). 125 words. Set during ‘The Final Problem’). I wrote it the weekend before last, when the prompt 'magpie' made me think of the scenario, let it rest, got the idea for the title and posted it. I hope to post a few more ficlets over the coming days as a sort of spring cleaning because since finishing the reccing, I’ve been looking over what I thought were snippets, polishing them and writing new bits and bobs.
Fourthly, I intend to play TV catch up today so perhaps I’ll be posting about the results of that.

Not Quite a Gulp, Sherlock, Universal. Molly Hooper (Molly/Sherlock). 125 words. Set during ‘The Final Problem’. Written for the prompt ‘magpie’ at
comment_fic. The title comes from ‘gulp’ being one of the collective nouns for magpies.

First recs post of the year
Mar. 18th, 2018 12:33 pmIt's turned out to be a snow day, and my mind has turned to reccing because [Bad username or site: het_reccers @ LJ"] is winding up at the end of the month.
Here are some fanfiction, fanvid and fanart recs in the following fandoms: The Bourne Legacy, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Galaxy Quest, Harry Potter, Independence Day, The Lake House, Lord of the Rings, Marvel Cinematic Universe, Mr and Mrs Smith, Multifandom, Sherlock and Tam Lin (Pamela Dean.) Bits and bobs
Jan. 25th, 2018 06:06 pmFrom Monday to today seems to have been swallowed up by a vortex. I’ve only had snatches online. Back on Sunday, I posted The Princess and the Dragons of Many Hues. PG. Original/Fairy Tale
Characters: A princess, her sisters, a king, a queen, a governess, servants, subjects, artists and a lover, and various dragons.
Summary: In a world where there are dragons of many hues, it took this princess to approach them.
(1,505 words.) Inspired by rather than a fill for the prompt: Fairy Tales, any, a dragon of a different colour.
( The writing thereof, film trailers and Pacific Rim feelings )
Later tonight, I’ll post my thoughts about the TV I’ve watched this week.

Two things (about Avengers of some sort)
Jan. 19th, 2018 07:56 pmMaybe a Black Widow movie is inching closer into existence. I read this at The Guardian, squeaked, had to try to explain why…and it was a squeak, not squeeing.
As to the news, I want something more definite before I let myself squee, and I don’t think they need to wait to see how Captain Marvel does before getting this going. If it happens, it’ll be interesting to see if they’ll pull in other Avengers (Bruce or Clint?) and what size role they get – although ( spoilers for ) Homecoming and Ragnarok.
In the other (British) Avengers news, Shane ‘Iron Man 3’ Black and his writing partner are working on a reboot of The Avengers. My thoughts: don’t do what the movie did (although Fiennes was good casting, it was a mess). And underlying that, there's great wariness. I know extreme reboots have worked, but I think you need to understand the era in, well, England, to get it right, and the tone of The Avengers is easy to get wrong.

Recent writing
Dec. 30th, 2017 09:09 amI’ve been writing very self-indulgent stuff of late, most of which is probably never going to get posted. I was planning to post an edited WIP meme, just to record that some of those fics had been started, to prove that I’d been writing more than I’d posted and perhaps in the hope of it encouraging me to continue to the point where I’d post one of them. I hope to post more than one of them eventually.
Anyway, what happened instead is that this week a few prompts got me writing ficlets:
All dessed up and nowhere to go Christmas-set original micro fiction. (308 words.) The POV and tone came to me when I saw the prompt and the ending as I wrote it. No, it’s not fanfic, but it feels apt at the close of the year Wonder Woman got her movie.
Then
autumnia pointed me to the three sentence ficathon, which I’d missed out on, and two prompts made me think of Layla and Warren.
Call Me Sky High. Universal. Layla/Warren. (106 words.) Written for the prompt ‘Any, any, mouthful of names you used to breathe on me’.
Where Beauty Wears a Mask Sky High. Universal. Warren/Layla. (90 words.) Written for the prompt ‘Any, any, where beauty wears a mask’. Can be read as a companion piece to ‘Call Me’.
I hope to do my annual writing meme in the next couple of days.

some links
Jun. 22nd, 2017 06:48 pmI know everyone is linking to interesting Wonder Woman stuff, but if you haven't seen it, here's a list of heart-warming ways young children have responded to Wonder Woman via Digial Spy.
I meant to post this when reviewing Salazar's revenge, but here's an excellent
idol_reflection essay on (Captain) Jack Sparrow, based on the first three Pirates movies – worth reading the comments for a look at Jack as a trickster: Captain Jack Sparrow - A Legend in His Own Mind by The Stowaway.
And via
musesfool The Chrisening of Hollywood from Vanity Fair - an amusing take on the Four Chrises phenomenon here.

Fics - old and new.
Jun. 1st, 2017 07:43 amOn Tuesday I posted my first new fic of the year and the first one for six months: Extreme Action, a Sky High, Layla/Warren futurefic. It was first drafted in July 2015, which wasn’t a wonderful time for me. Having a title that would suit an early 90s action flick better than a fluffy tropefic appealed to me, apparently. Anyway, a couple of months ago, as I was doing looking through some drafts, I found that this one didn’t need much work – usually I have stalled before coming up with an ending. In the editing process, it passed the thousand word mark, et voila.
For completeness on Livejournal: this spring, I’ve also reposted the following fics at Dreamwidth and A03. ( Read more... )

Miscellaneous links
Apr. 9th, 2017 04:10 pmI said a little while ago that I was going to post a linkspam. Well, here goes in reverse chronological order. I've been holding on to these links for ages, and most of them come via my reading page.

( Shakespeare, Introversion, DS9, Tropes, Movie stuff and Denethor meta )
On Thursday night, I fully intended to watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but I sat down to look at books online about twenty minutes before and when I checked the time next, it was six minutes past nine and, well, I'll catch up and write about it later.
Earlier in the week I did watch a whole episode of Suits (6.11) online, i.e. I went and looked for it because it airs at 10pm on a Sunday night, which is not a time I’m going to attempt to start to watch a show.
My previous association with Suits has been fragmentary, growing from a flurry of Harvey/Donna fics on my friends list or het_reccers. Oh yes, I'm so far down the fandom journey that I've read fic without consuming the canon properly - reading outlines or reviews, watching clips or vids will do to give me a grasp of things. Sometimes it turns into my watching the show/film properly. I did try to watch Suits, understood the concept (but the way it all revolved around Harvey and Mike, pretty though they are, didn't hook me and the lawyering didn't either. I grasped that Donna was awesome and enjoyed watching Gina Torres, but I don't think I watched a full episode. In the last one I saw, the music editor was really into the xx (which I understand) and Harvey was in a relationship with a single mother?
Anyway, a TV guide said something about ( spoilers for 6.11 )
In other news, Festivids went live more than several days ago and I have many new vids to watch.

Last night, at the last minute, instead of catching up with Humans (but I will so I can watch it live from Sunday on), as I’d intended to, I ended up watching Stephen Poliakoff’s Close to the Enemy. I won’t be repeating that action next week.
