Jan. 3rd, 2024 02:27 pmOn the bright side, I wrote more fic than last year! I wrote a Hart of Dixie ficlet, a Harry Potter three-sentence fic and posted a one-shot for Sanditon in March. (It makes for a total of 2,694 words.)
On the Table, Hart of Dixie, AnnaBeth/Lavon, post 2.13 ‘Lovesick Blues'. Summary: After AnnaBeth, er, went into Lavon’s place. Teen, 290 words.

First Christmas special

It occurred to me I had the time and space during the build-up to Christmas to get back to reposting fic (I’m not writing any new fanfiction), so I reposted a couple here and on AO3.
Je me souviens, every single thing, The O.C., PG, Taylor/Ryan implied. Coda to 4.04 ‘The Metamorphosis’. 169 words. Summary: I remember every single thing. (February 2007).

I don’t have much to say about them. Looking back, I think they’re slight, but they show how taken I was by Taylor/Ryan in season 4 of The OC. (I had an absolute HTML-related nightmare updating the masterlist after ‘Je me souviens’.)

Cinema: Anatomy of a Fall, which I thought was good, although I’m not raving about it like critics. Streaming: The Last Five Years, Anna Kendrick in a musical, which is, OF COURSE, set in New York, aggressively so because shooting on location is one of the big reasons to adapt it into a movie.

Fanfic (see above). Otherwise, I’ve just started a book (non-fiction, a gift so I’m not going to name it.) I’m planning to read a chapter in between fiction, but I haven’t started the next one yet. I just finished ‘Dark Orbit’ by Caroline Ives Gilman, sci-fi, with A LOT going on in it.

It Takes Two and Strictly Come Dancing live or as live as I can, The Wheel of Time (my take on the last ep I watched ought to have been this post), Cardiac Arrest and Hart of Dixie. I’m also rewatching The West Wing. Some quiz shows and panel shows that I generally don’t discuss here.

A sci-fi movie and fantasy TV
Nov. 3rd, 2023 05:16 pmI have been to the cinema again! (It’s still a bit of a novelty.) I went to see The Creator by Gareth Edwards, who I know from Monsters, which I love, and this shares the CGI meets real locations DNA of that film, although it’s not as good. (The movie, I mean, the FX are great.) It kind of worked for me emotionally, eventually, but the more you think about it, the more it falls apart. Even while watching it, I was side-eyeing the hero and the male POV, quibbling about scientific parameters, finding where it eventually landed with its ‘goodies’ and baddies’ snarkworthy. Much has been made of it being original (i.e. not an adaptation or part of a franchise), but there’s a long list of clear influences. The acting is good – John David Washington sounding like his father, Gemma ‘Humans was an audition’ Chan, Allison Janney! Young Madeline Yuna Voyles is terrific. I was glad I experienced it on the big screen, though.

I was just about to watch this episode when the recent atrocities started happening in the Middle East. I’m not going to comment too much on that, but will say that I had complicated feelings about hearing some names that I’ve been hearing a lot on the news in a fictionalised context from nearly two decades ago, and some of those feelings came from being aware of my privilege of being distant enough to even countenance watching this right now.
