The Mentalist end of season 6

Caught up with 6.21 Black Hearts
I’m glad they got down to business – Lisbon under pressure to decide and the only case being the trafficking/organ harvesting one with Jane (and Lisbon) versus Titus Welliver’s bad guy. It felt like there was a nice counterbalance between the two men – one that could have breathed in a longer story arc.
The moment between Lisbon and Cho was perfect.
I liked that they showed Fischer’s increasing investment in the case, although she didn’t go as far as threatening a diplomat a la Cho, about whom we were left to wonder if he’d promised too much. Although, in fairness, everyone was very invested in solving this case.
And then we got to see that Lisbon wasn’t holding an empty teacup and mug (my heart) before the couch scene, which you could read as her trying to say goodbye. A nice scene that showed all the intimacy they’ve accumulated over the years.
That visit to the daughter’s house while she was sleeping was creepifying, and, like her father (?), I thought that she was dead.
Ha, Jane asks Lisbon to help him break lots of laws and lie to do the right thing and you know she’s not going to spend that long having a think about it.
I was giggling at the whole operation thing, to be honest. Wylie was so excited to be a part of it.
I don’t know why Abbot bothered with the slap on the wrist as Jane brazened it out or what he was hoping to achieve with the little chat with Lisbon, which seemed to be at odds with last week’s shipping. (Plus Fischer’s line about Lisbon always working with Jane was heavy-handed.)
You won the going to DC point, Pike. You seem to have noticed how skittish she is and you’ve got a failed marriage behind you. I both get why you proposed in that moment – Lisbon is irresistible - and think that the answer tells you everything you need to know. Also, Lisbon really isn’t necessarily going to need romantic locations for one of the most important questions of her life (plz use the replacement lift for an intense Jane/Lisbon scene if not kissing in it in the next episode, SHOW).
Lisbon and Jane were hopeless about expressing their feelings in the last scene. As if he took in a word of that book he was reading. Plus Lisbon/Pike were in his sightline. He saw it all.
A couple of nights after, I watched
6.22 Blue Bird
So, having solved the big case, I was wondering what case they’d solve in the final episode. The answer was, after the one Jane breezily solved with a tiny amount of his attention, Jane and Lisbon's last case. And it was comparatively light. Five years gone, and people seemed to have moved on if you didn’t dig too deep…
I wondered if Jane was behind it all, basically from the second they read the letter out, especially because of the puzzle element (or even if he hadn't, I thought he'd cracked it and would refuse to solve it to keep Lisbon around as long as possible.)
A second to wonder what The Chief is like.
Miami or "Miami" was very colourful (and a reminder of the island Jane ran away to mid-season?) as Jane gave Lisbon the full Jane experience in an attempt to remind her of how much fun hanging around with him was. And how little fun being married to Pike might be (proof he did notice the proposal, I think.)
For the second time this season, he dressed her up appropriately, except it wasn't appropriate and we had a classic Angry!Lisbon moment, with Abbott and Cho as embarassed onlookers.
The conversation through the door was telling, because the subtext was that she knows all this about Jane, but loves him anyway, and the challenge was for him to tell her upfront that he didn't want her to leave. And why.
I would have thought that 'never accept a marriage proposal in a temper' was a good maxim, myself.
As for Cho not knowing, I think the only reason is he's spent so much time practicing the fine art of not knowing with those two that he's convinced himself. How Rigsby and Van Pelt will laugh.
But then Jane had forgotten the case and that he’d all but invited a killer to his suite.
So we got Cho lamely trying out the ‘but they’re like brother and sister’ line, which certainly hasn’t worked in the last few episodes. Previous to that, of course, it depended on which way the wind was blowing in the writer’s room. (I’ve been over-thinking when it started for Jane.)
I could not believe we were getting The Dash like this was some romantic comedy at the end, down to Jane coming to his senses after hearing another’s great regret and the line from the lady next to Lisbon after. However, in between, I thought the simplicity of Jane’s speech (and, as ever, Baker’s acting) really, really worked. It was a healthy step, and he’s still wearing the ring, because that and the fear is a part of his burden. And Lisbon knows that, but he also was able to do what she needed him to do and tell her he loved her.
And kissing across an interrogation table? It’s not too shabby a second choice after the lift. And I really liked his deliberation about it and her expectancy. Given what’s happened over the last six seasons, it was neither too chaste or too passionate. (Having said that, it’s competing with a ton of fanfic writers’ versions in my head.)
However, Teresa Lisbon, you should be ashamed of yourself for being so corrupted by Jane to be callous towards nice guy Pike.
I thought the freezing and fading out was cheesy.
And though I think that it would have been better given that we’d had the Red John killing and the reboot in this season if they’d just kept heating up the Jane/Lisbon slowly and dealt with it next season, needs must. Although now that they’re renewed, they’re just basically going to both be in danger next season, aren’t they? Can Wylie be bumped up to a regular? And can we have some kissing in the replacement lift?
I’ve seen X-Men Days of Future Past and will post my reaction eventually.
I also watched B99 1.20 Fancy Brugom – I liked the way Charles became the Bridezilla almost, any scene with Rosa uttering the words ‘I’m sorry’ were gold and it was thoroughly amusing throughout.
