[personal profile] shallowness
The Mindy Project 2.9

The fallout from the texting business was what was most interesting to me – Mindy’s awkwardness around Cliff (his bragging about his plans with his new girlfriend were offputting) and Morgan’s response to try to make things better.

The crux of the episode was pretty meta – the key line being about Mindy always going for white guys (because I think that’s a criticism that’s been levelled at Kaling and the show). But they decided to turn it around to admitting condescension. Eh. Bringing in the midwives worked. The thing between Danny and the PR person was pretty shambolically built up to. Or barely built up to, one could say, while nearly everything else about the ep had history to it.

While Tamra and her headbutting with Mindy was not unamusing, so I can see why they put her in the titles, the other changes and the fact that the New Doctor tried really hard to become a senior partner suggests he’s going to stay. Not enthused by that, and somewhat disappointed by this episode overall.

The Honourable Woman

Ep 5 Two Hearts

A bit too disjointed an episode, jumping from the past to the present to a subplot involving the Israeli professor (who wasn’t paranoid enough). The teasing mystery of who was behind Monica (the Americans it seemed like, but I don't know) and why they wanted to control the phase 3 contract – was it they who’d staged that man’s suicide also, and where does the kidnappers’ bid come in? (I suppose if the kidnappers were also behind Monica, that would explain why they wanted to gert rid of all of the competition.) It’s still fairly murky although it became clear that listening in was the aim.

Nessa’s admission of her feelings for Atika wasn’t entirely a surprise going back to episode one impressions, although Atika knew Ephra first (Ephra who manages to be contemptible a lot of the time, and yet easily broken). I am not entirely convinced about the women's response to Kasim, as written.

What we learned about Nathaniel still doesn’t absolve Nessa of giving him up. I hope the investigator’s turns of phrase are based on a specific linguistic thing.

Julia and Hugh were, as ever, hugely good value. And, also as ever, striking, studied visual compositions. Flawed this may be, but it's hugely atmospheric and insists upon your attention.
