Author's Note: Inspired by the unclaimed prompts in the Awesome Ladies 2010 ficathon. It’s not about a fandom, but about some of what Fandom is about. 329 words.
We just haven’t written you yet: shallowness
These are the stories of the women we know as girls, setting out on adventures across deserts on planets far away from Earth or traversing high school hallways between classes. These are the stories of the women we admire, picking themselves up after the dealer gave them the worst possible card, the casino exploded and they regained their hearing to the sound of hoarse cries. These are the stories of the women who intrigue us, the captains and their orders, the lieutenants and the last sip before the do-or-die mission, the medics who plait their hair and crack a joke while slipping on gloves that will soon be bloodied.
These are the memories of the ladies who saw an empire fall – and know why it crashed down - the letters of the sisters who made the mistake of listening to their fathers, the intercepted phone calls of princesses on the run. These are the indiscretions of lovers, the mistakes made, the misunderstandings resolved, on horseback, on the way to the moon, on the platform waiting for the train.
These are the other lives of the love interests, the secretaries who are superheroes for one night only – our words marking out their panels, their stage, their big screen. These women whisper to the wind and it plays along; they tell lies to their children, exchange stories with their friends and we cry ‘You’re just like us’.
And there are always more stories to tell: what came after, before, when she wasn’t a spy, before she went into the shop, after she stopped caring about her grey hair. There are fans to be snapped shut, envelopes to be opened, drinks to be drunk at an outpost far, far away. She’s a tramp and a traveller. She stayed in the interrogation chamber, then she let herself out of the window and followed the garden path out into the big, wide world. Haven’t you heard her sing about it yet? Next time, perhaps.
