shallowness: bright flowers in vase against green background (flowers that remind me of Layla)
[personal profile] shallowness
It feels like I've watched a lot of telly since I last posted. Well, I have. Here come the catch-up posts.

Downton Abbey 5.04

More of the same, mostly: The ladies of Downton force Tom to invite Sarah, she eats the bread of the head oppressor of the workers and then decides to spout off, Robert blows a gasket. So, maybe there was some escalation there, and we felt the frisson from the dining table down to the kitchen table, but we’ve seen it all before.

Robert also continued to ignore his lovely wife’s views and denigrate her and the grump that her French Revolution hero husband in a past life the art expert was making up to her. Actually, Robert interrupted just as the chap was really crossing over a line that Cora couldn’t ignore. But now she can, if she wants. Well done, Robert, you blunderer.

Although there was talk of divorce rumbling around, I don’t feel that Cora/Robert is that threatened – her advice to him to get out of bed on the right side the next day spoke of so many years. Also, Violet is on the case.

Oh, Violet, Isabel is your BFF, however much you try to hide it. I was amused by how inconsistent she was – telling Edith that Edith’s interests and the family’s were one and the same to her, but then ditching actual blood relation Susan for Shrimpy, simply because no-one would call Susan ‘old bean’ ever.

The news/confirmation of her parents’ divorce news added shade (if not depth) to Rose, and I’m glad she got to talk it out with her father. I’ve wanted the show to do something more with her, and we seem to be getting that – also, actually seeing her in the Russian crypt/soup kitchen was a reminder of Sybil and Edith’s war effort.

Oh, Edith, no, don’t do stalking.

Really disliked Mary hard in this ep (although I was amused by her at dinner and liked how she was with her father and Tom when talking business. Speaking of, why can’t Robert be that reasonable over other stuff?) But fancy Tony not doing your bidding after you slept with him and then decided you didn’t want him, Mary. FANCY THAT.

(Still, she looked fabulous.)

Rosamund sighting!

I thought it was absurd that Charles was at a fashion show, but whatever.

Oh, Anna, no. (I’m blaming Mary.)

I don’t know if Isobel taking the time offered by Lord Merton to consider his proposal was fair, really. If she doesn’t love him or can’t live with marrying him on those terms, the quicker she tells him, the better (and given that the Michael and Greene plotlines have dragged on and on, I’m all for quick resolution of anything.)

While I was delighted at how Daisy used her education to help Mrs Patmore, the grief-stricken auntie’s attempt to emotionally blackmail Carson didn’t do much for me (and I’d normally side with her over him).

I’m sure there’s stuff I forgot to mention. Oh, well.
